Landfill Gate Attendant
Job description
The Landfill Gate Attendant is the entry level classification in the Resource Recovery series. Under supervision, incumbents work at the entrance gate of the Resource Recovery Facility, handle incoming customer traffic via inspection, collection of fees and directs users to the correct location in the Facility. The Landfill Gate Attendant is distinguished from the next higher classification of Resource Recovery Worker I in that the later classification assists in the daily operations by collecting, sorting and baling recyclable materials; moves and stacks materials and assists with maintaining the worksite
- Opens landfill gates for business and locks gates at end of day.
- Inspects incoming loads for compliance with State and Federal Hazardous Materials laws and City regulations.
- Operates automatic truck scale and computer for data management system.
- Determines appropriate fees, collects money and issues receipts for private vehicles, commercial hauling vehicles and commercial accounts.
- On completion of shift, counts money, balances register, prepares deposit, completes receipt reports and delivers deposit to Finance Department.
- Directs users to landfill or recycling center.
- Maintains recycling resale market.
- Assists with upkeep of work area.
- Performs other related duties that may be reasonably expected as part of this classification.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Education and Experience
- High school graduation or tested equivalent; and
- One (1) year experience in cashiering, retail, or book-keeping which includes public contact.
Knowledge:
- Basic mathematical calculations.
- Basic cash handling practices and record keeping.
- Basic computer applications used for word-processing and data management
Skills:
- Skill to use a 10-key calculator with speed and accuracy.
Abilities
- Make basic mathematical computations accurately.
- Count money quickly and accurately.
- Operate cash register software.
- Read and write effectively.
- Follow written and verbal instructions.
- Act in a courteous manner when dealing with the general public by phone or in person.
- Learn to operate electronic scale.
- Learn to input data into the computer.
