Weekapaug Yacht Club is seeking a creative, experienced and dynamic manger for its Kids Camp program. This is a part-time position that runs from late June through late August or early September. The Camp operates close to the water, so maturity and judgement in the camp manager is imparative. This season, the camp will operate out of a spectacular new clubhouse, located in one of Rhode Island’s most beautiful coastal locations, where there are literally oceans of possibilities when it comes to activities. The ideal candidate will have a teaching background and a love of the water and coastal nature.
General Duties and Responsibilities:
The Kids Camp Manager (“The Manager”) is responsible for the development and implementation of the Kids Camp program including preparation of a lesson plan for the entire season (late June to late August or early September as determined by Club management) as well as a weekly and daily lesson plan tailored to the program’s two age groups, Junior Crew (6-7 year old) and Little Mariners (4-5 year old). The Manager also has primary responsibility for ensuring the safety of the children in the program at all times while classes are in session. The Manager will oversee and train the Kids Camp Counselors and will work with the Club Manager, the club Officers and the club staff as necessary.
Time Commitment: The Kids Camp manager’s hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 12:30pm.
Seasonality: This offer is for the 2023 season. Whether this position will be continued or available in future years is at the discretion of the club.
Reporting/Supervisory Relationships: The Kids Camp Manager reports directly to the Club Manager and indirectly to the Commodore.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Camp Responsibilities
- Oversight and management of each day’s Camp session
- Develop basic pre-sailing skills and self-confidence as new campers join the program.
- Bring creative ideas for young camper activities including sailing-oriented games, activities and crafts, introducing campers to the pond, the beach and boats, including pre-sailing skills such as knot tying, naming boat parts.
- Develop on and off water safety skills in all activities. This is a high priority and will be taught as part of every lesson plan, emphasized and repeated as necessary.
- Develop an indoor class plan to engage campers on days when the weather doesn’t allow outside classes.
- Inform parents about appropriate clothing and other gear campers will need for special days at camp.
- Oversee and train camp counselors as well as report any behavioral or performance issues to the Club Manager.
Management Responsibilities
- Coordinate with senior sailing and office staff to determine boats available for Camp use.
- Coordinate with the Club Office to ensure all parents are dropping their kids off for correct Camp days, and times.
- Work with the Club office to organize snacks and drinks for campers.
- Assist office and Events Committee in staffing social events with camp counselors.
- Assist the office at registration to gather all forms required of parents to make for a smooth first day of each session of Camp.
- Assist the office to ensure all enrollment info is up to date.
- Organize staffing in coordination with the Office for the week based on enrollment.
- Report immediately or as soon as possible any safety issues to the Club Manager.
Professional Conduct: As Kids Camp Manager, you will be expected to
- Communicate respectfully and appropriately with parents about their campers needs and concerns.
- Promote a spirit of cooperation, teamwork, friendship and respect with all campers, staff, and parents.
- Obtain the approval of the Club Manager for any absence.
- Obtain approval for hours worked outside of Camp hours from the Club Manager.
- Backgroud Check: At the Club’s discretion a background check may be performed before commencing work for the Club
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
