Position Summary:
The Department of Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA), located in the Division of Arts & Humanities at Philander Smith College, invites applications for the position Instructor/ Assistant Professor of Studio Arts/Art History, beginning in August 2023.
Position Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching approximately 12 hours per semester in art studio, art history, and general education courses, conducting research, and participating in appropriate university service. Additionally, the successful candidate will work collaboratively with faculty and community partners to generate new courses and revise the current Visual Arts curriculum. The successful candidate will have prior teaching experience and be able to teach lower-division courses in Visual and Performing Arts: Intro to VAPA, Art Fundamentals, and Freshman Colloquium.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Teach undergraduate courses in Art History, Studio Art, and Visual and Performing Arts Participate in the activities of the department, division, and college including recruitment and new course development.
Maintain 10 regularly scheduled office hours on a weekly basis.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
Applicant must meet the minimum qualifications of a Studio Art faculty discipline at the college level.
Master's in fine arts, art, or art history OR Bachelors in any of the above AND Master's in humanities OR the equivalent. (NOTE: "Master's in fine arts" as used here refers to any master's degree in the subject matter of fine arts, which is defined to include visual studio arts such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, textiles, and metal and jewelry art; and also art education and art therapy. It does not refer to the "Master of Fine Arts" (MFA) degree when that degree is based on specialization in performing arts or dance, film, video, photography, creative writing, or other non plastic arts.)
At least one (1) year of teaching experience at the college level
Must have evidence of excellence in teaching.
Preferred Qualifications:
Masters of Fine Arts / Fine Art Studio; with teaching experience as the instructor of record at the College/University level, to include the following courses: Design I (Art 10A), Drawing I (Art 20A), & 3D Design (Art 13);
Experience in any of the following should be highlighted: Ceramics, Printmaking, Glass, Jewelry, and Fiber.
Ability to provide leadership in the development of emerging digital and computer-controlled fabrication technologies;
Demonstrated professional leadership experience in Fine Art / Design with an emphasis on teaching the hands-on fundamentals, offering a balance of essential traditional hands-on methods along with visual communication, problem-solving and critical thinking skills;
Demonstrated understanding of contemporary art theory and practice and an ability to acknowledge the influence of culture in the classroom and curriculum;
Ability to be a good partner with other professionals and faculty and to participate in program and institutional responsibilities;
Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to develop proposals for curriculum
development and institutional committee work;
Demonstrated ability to lead and oversee the various studio and classroom spaces;
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellence oral and written communication skills
Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the university level
Demonstrated the ability to work collaboratively with university colleagues within a diverse environment.
Ability to contribute to academic program development at the undergraduate level.
Ability to demonstrate proficiency in assessment of writing and critical thinking
Ability to be adaptable, collegial, and dedicated to student centered and writing intensive teaching
Physical Requirements:
Ability to perform range of physical motions, exerting up to 25 pounds; lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds; standing, walking, sitting for long periods of time, kneeling, squatting, and stooping; and traversing up and down stairs.
