JOB TITLE:
Linux Systems Administrator
JOB PURPOSE:
The Linux Systems Administrator will join the ARCC team in the design, implementation, support, and operation of UW's overall computational research focused cyber-infrastructure, including High Performance Compute clusters, high performance digital storage systems, networking, and security.
Note: On the job training for advanced topics such as HPC clusters, networking, high performance storage may be available for candidates that possess a foundational knowledge of Linux or systems administration.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Participate in design and management of system architecture for new or existing HPC systems and clusters that includes compute, interconnect, and storage components.
Linux systems administration in an enterprise environment.
Ensure systems and infrastructure are properly secured and protected against security threats.
Stay up to date and informed on the latest cybersecurity techniques and tools.
Work with the team to troubleshoot and fix issues with hardware such as enterprise class servers, storage devices, or even desktop computers.
Maintains understanding of the HPC community and technology trends to enable building the next generation HPC systems.
Manage the operations/system administration of production HPC clusters to meet SLA and operational requirements.
Supports procurement of system components by evaluating technologies/sources, preparing specifications, and evaluating proposals.
Provides guidance and mentoring to less experienced Systems Administrators.
Works as an individual leader, team member, and individual contributor.
Ensure assigned backup personnel are trained on services and servers.
Documentation for technical workflows, system procedures, user wikis and FAQs
Organize, prioritize & communicate project strategies to meet multiple, demanding & conflicting project timelines.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
Other duties as assigned.
Respond to systems outages on a 24x7 basis
Regular, predictable attendance is required to perform the essential duties of this position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in
Computer Science or related field
or equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience:
2
years of experience as a systems administrator
Required licensure, certification, registration or other requirements:
None
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
M.S. in Computer Science or technical related field.
3 years’ experience as systems administrator in an HPC environment.
2 years’ experience with enterprise class systems hardware.
1 year experience scripting or programming in a Linux environment.
Competency in on-premise or hosted virtualized server environments.
Experience with storage systems and data management.
Experience with networking.
