AmeriCorps Members selected to serve in the House of Trades project will be provided the opportunity to gain valuable skills while “getting things done” for local communities through their hands-on service of home renovation and community service projects.


House of Trades Members serve an average of 28 hours per week. Living allowance is received twice a month in the amount of $470.


Education Award Amounts are depended on Term of Service Type and are earned when a minimum number of hours are reached.

450 Hours $1,638.89

900 Hours $3,097.50

Schedule is 4 full days per week Tuesday - Friday 8:30 - 4:00


During their term of service, House of Trades Members are introduced to a number of Home Renovation Skills. Below is a list of possible topics and skills gained while serving.

Baseline Safety

  • Home Safety
  • Construction/Project Safety
  • Equipment Safety
  • Home Repair
  • Intro to Painting

Participants gain skills and knowledge necessary to:

  • Establish and maintain a safe home environment free of potential hazards
  • Plan for tool safety within the home
  • Complete basic home repairs
  • Plan, prepare, and complete an interior painting project

Mini Courses:

  • Intro to Carpentry
  • Intro to Electrical
  • Intro to Plumbing
  • Floor Coverings
  • Intro to Drywall
  • Electrical

Participants gain skills and knowledge necessary to:

  • Demonstrate basic construction safety
  • Use power tools safely
  • Install Electrical switch and receptacle
  • Install a sink and water closet
  • Install drywall
  • Install doors and hardware
  • Install carpet and VCT flooring

Who is eligible to serve?

Must be 17 years of age or older by start date of service. Candidates selected to serve must submit the following documentation to verify their eligibility: Driver’s license / PA State ID card, Social Security Card, Birth Certificate, Proof of Education (High School Diploma, College ID, Transcripts). Additionally, all candidates must be able to pass all required State and FBI background checks. AmeriCorps host site placements may have additional qualifications for their AmeriCorps members.
