Salary Range: $ 13.65 - $14.25

Job Summary

The Historic Site Interpreter is a part time, year round position working approximately 24-29 hours per week Mid-April-October and approximately 10 hours per week November-March. The interpreter’s primary function is to research, write, conduct, and support a wide range of interpretive programs including, but not limited to historic skill workshops, site tours, school field trips, special events, and similar. Additional duties will include visitor services rolls such as admission and gift shop sales, light cleaning, gardening, and special project work as assigned. This position reports to the Curator of Historic Sites.

Typical schedule for this position would be similar to the below examples with some variation based on needs of school groups, special events, rentals, and similar.

    • April-October: 24-29 hours a week, (Ex. Tues-Thurs 9am-1pm, Fri-Sat 9am-4:30pm)
    • November-March 10-16 hours a week, (Ex. Tues- 9am-4:30pm, Sat 9am-1pm)

Experience, Knowledge, Skills:

  • Demonstrated excellent ability in public speaking and customer service
  • Ability to adapt verbal and visual communication to diverse audience groups
  • Follow written and verbal instructions, policies, and procedures
  • Experience working with audiences from children to seniors in informal or formal learning environments
  • Knowledge of and interest in Greeley, Weld County, and Colorado history
  • Knowledge of or interest in historic skillsets ranging from skills such as fibercraft, historic cooking, blacksmithing, printing, and/or similar others
  • High School graduate/GED equivalent and six months of relevant experience
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Basic historic research and content writing skills
  • Knowledge of basic accounting and cash handling
  • Experience in third-person interpretation techniques
  • Valid CO driver’s license and good driving record
  • Certified Interpretive Guide Training desired, but not required.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide excellent customer services to all Historic Sites Patrons during a variety of formal and informal interactions.
  • Conduct primary and secondary source research as required for the creation of programs, workshops, special projects, and other areas as assigned.
  • Conduct a variety of formal and informal interpretive programs such as tours, workshops, and school programs for diverse audiences both at City of Greeley Museum Sites and at external locations such as schools, fairs, and similar.
  • Safely learn and demonstrate historic skills such as cooking, fiber arts, blacksmithing, woodworking, printing, and similar skills to a variety of audiences.
  • Perform visitor services work such as admissions and gift sales, visitor orientation, and opening and closing duties.
  • Assist in the creation of interpretive media such as social media posts, videos, and related projects as assigned.
  • Assist in training and supporting museum volunteers during learning workshops, school events, open weekends, and similar activities.
  • Assist grounds and facilities staff in a variety of light duties such as special event set-up and tear down, light gardening, minor cleaning, and similar tasks.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent and heavy interaction with museum visitors
  • Work is primarily performed on an outdoor 8-acre site where weather conditions can vary.
  • May be required to move, bend, twist, and stoop in performance of job duties
  • Ability to lift and move up to 40 pounds unassisted
  • Stamina sufficient to stand and walk for long periods of time
  • Must be comfortable working in historical clothing
  • Vision enough to preform job duties
  • Hearing and speech enough to effectively communicate with site visitors in person through presenting history programs and answering questions for group size ranging from 1 – 100 people.
  • Must be able to work holidays, weekends, and occasional evenings as required.
