Job description
The Philadelphia Inquirer is a public benefit corporation owned by the nonprofit Lenfest Institute for Journalism. Together, we’re at the center of a critical mission to create a lasting future for ambitious, engaging, and useful local journalism. We’re doing this, in part, by deepening our connection with the communities we serve. Our integrated digital and print platforms are the Philadelphia region’s largest media network. We’re passionate about building a sustainable model for indispensable local journalism, and we take pride in finding diverse, dynamic, and talented individuals to help push our team forward.

Harrisburg Reporter
The Philadelphia Inquirer is seeking an experienced reporter to cover the Pennsylvania state capitol, focusing on the new governor, the legislature, and what the politics and policies that emerge from Harrisburg mean, especially for the people of southeastern Pennsylvania. You’ll cover breaking stories and pursue enterprise journalism in a competitive environment that routinely yields news of national interest. We expect you to be well-sourced among politicians and lobbyists on all sides, while having the smarts and sophistication to avoid false balance or ‘bothsidesism.” Your reporting will illuminate how money, power and ideology shape everything from the schools where children learn, to the healthcare families receive, to how local law enforcement can address soaring gun violence. Though you’ll be the Inquirer’s sole Harrisburg-based reporter, you’ll be part of a robust, highly experienced group of politics and policy journalists based in Philly – only true team players need apply.
What You’ll Do
  • Report on breaking news requiring your expertise and sourcing,
collaborating with colleagues across the newsroom.
  • Pursue enterprise reporting that resonates deeply with local readers and helps turn them into subscribers
  • Identify the political and policy issues Philadelphians are talking about across social media platforms and bring those
conversations to our readers.
  • Seek out the best ways to use different story forms and approaches — explainers, visual stories, digital storytelling,
long-form narratives and service journalism — to help our audiences better understand and engage.
  • Use social media both as a reporting tool and as a venue for promoting work
Who We’re Looking For
  • An experienced journalist who pays keen attention to the region’s rich diversity of race, economic circumstances, age,
sexual orientation, geography and more. Experience covering state government in Harrisburg is a plus.
  • A reporter who can translate complex issues and politics for a general audience, and do it creatively.
  • A reporter who loves to break news, and use digital tools to tell the story as effectively as possible
  • A wordsmith with fine attention to detail and excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to use data in the service of storytelling
  • Enthusiastic on-the-ground reporting and willingness help colleagues
  • Fast and accurate reporter who produces tightly crafted journalism in a daily, unpredictable news environment.
The Philadelphia Inquirer is committed to attracting a diverse group of interested people to join our team, so please err on the side of applying even if you’re unsure if you meet all the qualifications. We encourage anyone to apply who shares our passion for indispensable journalism and our drive to create a sustainable business model to support it.

As an equal opportunity employer, The Inquirer is building an inclusive and equitable workplace where everyone feels a sense of belonging. We especially encourage people from marginalized and underrepresented backgrounds to apply, including people of color, women, people from the LGBTQIA+ community, and people with disabilities.
