About the Position
The Grounds Manager plays an important role in making the Zoo a safe, accessible and enjoyable place for our guests and animals by carefully maintaining the Zoo Grounds and Rental Facilities. They supervise the Groundskeepers and provide thoughtful and responsive customer service to inter-departmental team members and external vendors and contractors. They maintain the various and diverse landscapes in our themed sections of the Zoo and oversee our composting, trash and recycling programs. In close collaboration with the Senior Manager, Grounds & Horticulture, the Grounds Manager helps implement the grounds and landscaping initiatives, goals and mission.

Essential Job Duties

  • Supervise, schedule and assign daily tasks to Grounds Staff and monitor for quality and completion
  • Lead morning meetings and train staff on safety and landscape best practices
  • Oversee turf management and fertilization
  • Maintain plants, shrubs, trees, lawns, parking areas and public pathways
  • Manage weed abatement and trash, recycling and compost pick-up
  • Operate tools and machinery as needed to perform duties
  • Set up for Zoo special events and prepare spaces for parties/meetings in rental facilities
  • Support guest parking on high volume days at the Zoo
  • Performs other related duties as required and assigned

Who You Are

  • 10+ years in the Grounds or Landscape field or a combination of Education and experience. Coursework examples include forestry, agricultural operations, horticulture, or plant science.
  • Certifications - Heavy Equipment Operations, landscape maintenance,
  • At least 1 year of supervisory experience
  • Knowledge of landscape cost-estimating and maintenance requirements
  • Possess a High School Degree or GED
  • Able to safely operate heavy machinery, small power tools & equipment (eg chainsaw, bobcat)
  • Available to work on weekends and some holidays
  • Basic Computer skills (email, word processing and spreadsheets, PowerPoint)
  • Possess active Class C Driver’s License with a clean DMV record (able to obtain authorization to drive from Zoo’s insurance provider)
  • Able to work outside in all weather conditions, sometimes in or around significant dirt and dust
  • Able to bend and twist, lift and carry 75 lbs., stand, kneel, sit, bend, stoop, speak and walk on uneven terrain regularly for 8-hour shifts

  • Registered Landscape Architect, ISA Arborist, Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor or Qualified Water Efficient Landscaper
