GIS/Remote Sensing Analyst – Southern Region
Ridgeland, Mississippi
Ducks Unlimited, Inc (DU)., the world’s leading wetland and waterfowl conservation organization, is seeking an experienced GIS/Remote Sensing Analyst to join our highly motivated Southern Region team. The Analyst will be an integral addition to support and inform DU’s conservation planning and delivery goals throughout the 13-state Southern Region and will work collaboratively with staff across all departments. The successful candidate will be expected to use GIS/Remote sensing skills and tools to help inform and prioritize DU’s conservation efforts, help quantify project outcomes, provide quality control of habitat delivery, and assist with communications that emphasize the benefits of DU’s conservation efforts.
The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and maintaining Ducks Unlimited’s Southern Region geographic information systems (GIS) data, geoprocessing scripts, and related applications. The position’s duties include overseeing data management to include quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC), technical consulting, training, data analysis, cross-departmental and cross-regional collaboration. The position will also support geospatial analysis to identify and deepen our understanding of conservation priorities by 1) conducting spatial analysis and modeling, 2) acquiring, organizing, and developing spatial and tabular databases, 3) disseminating results as maps and tabular data, and 4) conveying an understanding of spatial analyses and results through oral communication, written reports, scientific publications, and other products. Analyses include, but are not limited to, quantifying relationships between diverse ecological or social data, conducting analyses of ecosystem representation and landscape connectivity, and assisting conservation planning staff in the development and application of geospatial models.
Qualifications:
Candidates must have a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in GIS, Geography, Natural Resources, Wildlife Management or related field and 3 years of experience is desired or a M.S. degree in similar field with 1 years of spatial analysis experience. The successful candidate will be expected to have a thorough knowledge of GIS/Remote sensing techniques, including data generation, image classification, accuracy assessment, metadata, and analytical techniques. A basic knowledge of GIS related hardware and software (ArcGIS/ArcPro), project management, ability to perform GIS demonstrations, and conduct spatial analysis and wildlife habitat modeling is also required. A strong background in remote sensing as well as experience with spatial modeling is preferred. Familiarity with modern GIS software, JavaScript, and Python is also desired.
Primary Responsibilities/Duties:
- Data management including quality assurance and control
- Work with interdisciplinary teams to design and conduct landscape analysis projects
- Summarize analysis results in tables and maps to clearly communicate to diverse audiences
- Compile, organize, analyze, and disseminate spatial data
- Create maps that clearly display analytical results and conservation messages
- Clearly write the methods of GIS analyses for publications, science briefs, reports, and other forms of communication
- Generate maps for publications, posters, reports, PowerPoint presentations and other internal and external communication needs
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Spatial data, relational database management systems, and metadata
- Cartographic principles, geographic projections, and data sources and formats
- ESRI software suite including: ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online/Portal, Survey 123, and Collector
- Latest data processing techniques, analysis, and modeling
- Remote sensing and image analysis
- Python, R, JavaScript and version control is preferable but not required
Skills in:
- Preparing maps and drawings based on field data, aerial photography analysis, land surveys, etc.
- Analyzing and problem solving
- Data modeling and maintenance
Ability to:
- Provide excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
- Balance, prioritize and organize multiple tasks
- Work collaboratively in teams and across organizations
- Synthesize feedback and adjust plans accordingly
- Develop and write technical documentation
- Develop geospatial models based on the best scientific knowledge available
- Self-starter – initiate GIS/Remote sensing applications and products to support conservation activities.
This position will report to the Director of Conservation Science & Planning for DU’s Southern Region and will cooperate with DU staff across the U.S., Canada and Mexico. This position will be located at DU’s Southern Regional Office located in Ridgeland, Mississippi.
