Underground Geotechnical Engineer

About the role

We are looking for a Geotechnical Engineer to assist and undertake geotechnical work that supports the development and implementation of medium and long-term mine plans. This is a demanding role that would suit a person who has a proven track record in rock mass characterization and underground excavation stability assessment.

The geotechnical teams receive strong support from management and are encouraged to explore innovative ways to meet the situations that go with mining underground within one of the world’s most iconic mines. Reporting to Senior Geotechnical Engineer, you will:

• QA/QC of geotechnical logging.
• Rock Mechanics core sampling selection and coordination for shipping the samples to the Lab.
• Overseeing and coordinating the work progress around core logging, ATV survey, laboratory testing.
• Processing the core logging data for rock mass characterization
• Assist in managing special projects on an as needed basis.
• Assist the Sr. Engineer to process, analyze and model geotechnical rock mass data to understand the rock mass and its response to mining for purposes of excavation stability, ground support design, stope design and mining sequence.
• Assist the Sr. Engineer to analyze and provide recommendations for the design of underground excavation and stope design using available analytical techniques including numerical models and limit equilibrium methods.
• Interact with the Underground Execution Geotechnical Team for geotechnical data collection and geotechnical instrumentation.
• Assist in identifying, defining and solving complex problems and risks that are, or have the potential to impact the overall productivity as part of a multi-disciplinary geoscience team.
• Assist on the Implementation best practices in geotechnical engineering, mine design, and mining operations to ensure safety and business goals are achieved.

What you’ll bring

• Degree qualification in Geotechnical, Geological, Mining or Civil Engineering is essential
• At least 2 years’ relevant operating and technical experience
• Proven mining experience which includes geotechnical design and rock characterization
• Ability to adapt to changing business conditions and communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels
• Demonstrated well-developed guidance, technical writing, and presentation skills for capturing and communicating understanding
