General Trans Tech I
Salary Plan/Grade: A 14 ($43,800 - $49,134)
Overnight Travel: Up to 25%

General Trans Tech II
Salary Plan/Grade: A 15 ($43,800 - $52,045)
Overnight Travel: Up to 25%

Position Description


Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties:

General Transp Tech I

  • Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accidents sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs highly-skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Drives to move/pick up litter and roadway debris.
  • Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper and mower.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms and PMI.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


General Trans Tech II

The essential duties for this job include all listed above and:

  • Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Mows rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.
  • Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large gradall, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor and profiling/milling machine.
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents and hazardous material spills.

Minimum Qualifications:

General Transp Tech I: No previous experience required.
General Transp Tech II: 1 year in engineering support, maintenance, construction, heavy equipment operation, roadway maintenance work, or related experience.

Licenses and Certifications:

General Transp Tech I

  • Safety Impact Certificate*
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must obtain a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with "N" endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A” License with "N" endorsement, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

General Trans Tech II

  • Safety Impact Certificate*
  • Commercial Driver Certifcate*
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License at time of application. Must obtained "N" endorsement, within 120 calendar days from date of employment. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Safety Impact and Commercial Driver Certificate is not required at the time of application. Safety Impact and Commercial Driver Certification will be issued by TxDOT at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Commercial Driver’s License

General Trans Tech II

  • Methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures
  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes

Physical Requirements for this job include:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise
  • Subject to vibration
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
  • Lifting-raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position
