As a full-time ESL Instructor, you will be a key member of a division that includes instruction and support in Adult Basic Education (ABE), Adult High School Completion (GED and HS+), and Integrated Basic Education, and Skills Training (I-BEST).
The Full-Time Tenure Track ESL Instructor will be responsible for teaching English language to immigrant and refugee students ages 18 – 80 from many linguistic and cultural backgrounds. They should be prepared to teach all levels and skill areas of English acquisition from basic literacy to English composition. They should be prepared to teach English contextualized in community, college and career readiness. They may be required to teach online (virtual or asynchronous), evening and/or weekend hours. They should also be prepared to join the small team of full-time faculty in providing leadership in and advocacy for the ESL program and the Basic and Transitional Studies division through departmental, divisional, campus, and district initiatives in the Seattle Colleges system.
This is a tenure track position.

Compensation for this role is $74,067 per year.

What you will be working on:
- Respectfully and effectively teach and work with people from diverse backgrounds (such as racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, gender, age, sexual orientation, socioeconomic) and with diverse physical and learning abilities.
- Prepare and teach a 15-credit load in the ESL program that integrates activities, themes, and content consistent with the Career and College Readiness Standards.
- Provide support and guidance to students as they identify their academic and professional goals.
- Use technology to provide multi-modal engaging and equitable language learning experiences and to support digital literacy and access.
- Collaborate with departmental colleagues in the placement and assessment of students.
- Participate in department, division, and college committee work.
- Collaborate on departmental issues by working with faculty colleagues on curriculum development and taking an active leadership role in ongoing department development and improvement plans.
- Advocate for the Basic and Transitional Studies division and ESL program and students.
- Assist with mentorship of newer faculty.
This position reports to the Dean of Basic and Transitional Studies and is governed by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between The American Federation of Teachers (Seattle Community Colleges Local 1789) and Seattle Colleges District VI.
What you bring as a candidate:
(Any Equivalent Combination of Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education and Experience)
- Master's degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) or in a related field.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience teaching English language to adult immigrant and refugee students in classes at a range of levels in community or technical colleges or at community-based organizations.
- Demonstrated experience in furthering the educational development of adult English language learners from diverse backgrounds (such as racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, gender, age, sexual orientation, socio-economic) and with diverse physical and learning abilities.
- Demonstrated experience with a wide range of appropriate teaching methods, instructional materials, and forms of assessment.
- Awareness of diverse learning styles and demonstrated experience in applying that knowledge to the development of teaching materials as well as the delivery of instruction.
- Demonstrated ability to integrate technology to enhance English language instruction, such as virtual/remote instruction, synchronous and asynchronous lessons and activities, online learning management systems, open-source materials, etc.
- Ability to communicate effectively and fluently in English, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to adapt and learn technology (i.e., Ctclink/PeopleSoft, MS 365+) sufficient for professional duties.
- Demonstrated efficiency in keeping detailed, accurate records and meeting multiple deadlines.
- Demonstrated leadership and collaboration with colleagues in setting division, departmental, and/or classroom policies, handling division and/or departmental problems.
- Demonstrated commitment to professional development through ongoing participation in training workshops, conferences, etc.
