First Hand
Northern Stage, a LORT D 240 seat regional theater in White River Junction, VT, seeks an
experienced First Hand for its 2022-2023 season. Northern Stage produces a mainstage season,
an education season, a New Works festival, and 4-6 other events year-round. The First Hand will
work closely with the Costume Shop Supervisor and other members of the production staff to
execute all necessary costume-related activity.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Assist Costume Shop Supervisor in executing all costume designs.

  • Execute builds based off of designer renderings and patterns under the direction of the

Costume Shop Supervisor.

  • Help to supervise work of apprentices, and volunteers, promoting a safe and healthy

work environment.

  • Assist in fittings, and execute alterations on costumes as needed.
  • Assist with pulling and restocking, and with the purchase and maintenance of costume

shop materials, supplies, and equipment.

  • Act as a member of a wardrobe crew as required.
  • Provide support for events outside the mainstage and education seasons.

Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or 2 years professional experience in theatrical costume construction.

  • Competent working knowledge of garment construction, alteration, and repair, fitting

costumes, and finishing work.

  • Strong stitching and construction skills.
  • Experience with dyeing and distressing preferred but not required.
  • Experience in wig maintenance preferred but not required.
  • High degree of interpersonal and communication skills.

Job Type Full time, with some nights and weekends required
Contract Dates: ASAP - 5/28/23 with possibility for renewal
Compensation: $17/h + overtime paid at time and a half
Benefits: Dental, Vision, Life insurance, and PTO. Subsidized housing available for rent through
