POSITION DESCRIPTION

This position will perform a variety of job tasks and storm related work year-round outdoors. This position exposes employees to periods when unpleasant working conditions exist. Work requires the use of heavy power-driven equipment and working in confined spaces, often exposing the employee to hazardous situations. Work requires close mental and visual concentration, hand/eye coordination and dexterity often in hazardous or adverse conditions. Duties involve the exercise of independent judgment within prescribed instructions and/or standard procedures. Most days are spent either walking, standing, bending, kneeling, crouching and/or working in confined areas. Extensive and regular out of town travel should be expected in this position.
Employees will gain skills, through structured training and guided OJT. Employment progression will require an employee to demonstrate skills, knowledge, and expertise of the level they currently hold. As employees complete the structured training and directed on the job training necessary, meet regulatory requirements (OSHA 10), and other qualifications, they will be able to progress to higher career levels.
The levels through which progress may be expected are as follows:
- Fiber Optic Splicing Technician
- Fiber Optic Splicing Crew Lead
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provide support for all construction-related activities, throughout all project phases
- Inspect vehicles & equipment prior to & after use, including checking fluid levels & tire pressure to ensure their safe & proper operation
- Operate power hand tools
- Perform moderate to heavy physical and manual labor activities such as carrying tools and materials, preparing and tearing down construction sites, removing debris and possible hazards, disposing of waste, loading or unloading materials to be used, digging trenches, backfilling holes, or compacting earth to prepare for construction, flagging, barricading, signs, etc.
- Operate and tend to equipment and machines used in all splicing & construction phases
- Support splicing technician using hand tools, including cable jacket strippers, crimpers, splicing and diagnostic equipment to include OTDR, CD/PMD, OLTS and other commonly used tools and testing equipment
- Support splicing technician with installation and dressing of fiber optic cabling to include enclosures, casing, splicing, and terminating; both loose tube and ribbon cables
- Support splicing technician in producing slicing diagrams and designs
- Support splicing technician in troubleshooting and resolving signal issues
- Perform tasks independently, reporting progress and getting assignments frequently throughout the day
- Follow plans and instructions from supervisors and/or more experienced workers
- Respond to emergency calls as qualified
- Drive trucks, equipment & materials to job sites
- Assist in preparing reports on project status & crew activities
- May perform other administrative work as required utilizing computer or laptop & integrated software
- Routine Training as assigned (LMS, OSHA – 10 hour, etc.)
- Roadside Traffic Control
REQUIREMENTS
- Strong verbal and written communications skills
- Ability to be on call 24/7/365
- Ability to work in seasonal elements
- Ability to travel/work out of town daily/weekly
- Ability to lift 75 pounds
- Be able to pass drug test
- DOT physical required

Pay: $15.00 - $21.00 per hour
