Job description
The Fermentation Maintenance Technician is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of the fermentation and downstream processes at the Easton facility.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Maintain a safe environment in all that is done.
- Gain a thorough understanding of fermentation operations, equipment, systems and processes utilized for material receiving/handling, media, fermentation, liquid processing, drying and bagging and any other new unit operations deemed necessary.
- Coordinate with other business entities as needed (housekeeping and sanitation, safety, facilities etc.) to continuously improve the manufacturing operations.
- Ensure all start-up and shut down as well as restart procedures are followed.
- Manage maintenance costs which includes parts and labor. Pro-actively identify and qualify utilization of external vs. internal resources.
- Support implementation of new asset projects.
- Follow all standard operating procedures as well as requirements set by HACCP and FAMI-QS standards.
- Ability to attend trainings as requested.
- Respond to breakdowns using a real time approach.
- Notify management of any material issues.
- Follow all standard operating procedures as well as requirements set by SFSF, NASC and FAMI-QS.
- Manage time for most effective way to utilize it for accountable growth.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
- High School graduate or GED equivalent
- Required Experience:
- Experience in equipment maintenance and operability
- Experience using Microsoft Office programs such as Word (to write business correspondence), Excel (for use of spreadsheets, reporting, simple formulas) and Outlook (for internal and external correspondence)
- Willing and able to work off hours, overtime, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
- Willing and able to wear the necessary Personal Protection equipment (PPE) (i.e. hard hats, safety glasses, face shield, chemical suit, respirator, ear plugs, hearing protection, steel-toe boots or safety shoes and other PPE required by specific jobs).
- Ability to pass a written and driving exam to prove capability of safely operating a forklift.
- Physical capabilities
- Able to lift and move 50lb. on a regular reoccurring basis.
- Must be able to climb ladders and platforms, enter confined spaces and wear all safety equipment.
- Work environment demands
- Regularly exposed to cold/hot and/ or humid conditions, climate extremes are found in all areas of the plant.
- Frequently works near machinery with moving parts and vibration.
- Regular exposure to fumes or airborne particles.
- Risk of electrical shock
- Noise level in the work environment is moderate but can be loud when in the production area.

- At least 5 years of industrial experience in a fermentation and sterile processing environment.
- Diagnose and test malfunctioning machinery and discuss plan to restore to full operation with key facility personnel such as Sr. Manager of Plant Operations/ or Sr. Manager of Production.
- Able to record all maintenance activities in the Maintenance Work Order System.
- Prepare maintenance reports for management as directed.
- Must be knowledgeable of OSHA safety requirements, especially those related to electrical, pressure vessels, and mechanical operations and components.
- Must be able to read and understand electrical schematics and blue prints.
- Full knowledge of three phase 240/480, volt equipment.
- Good understanding of PLC controls.
- Good understanding of boiler operations including water testing and troubleshooting.
- Demonstrated experience with pressure vessels, heat exchangers, bioreactors, agitation, and mechanical seals.
- Has 5 years of experience in the operation of fermenters, including sterilization of contents, fermenter repair and troubleshooting.
- Provide upkeep of all production equipment and maintain high level of sterile awareness.
- Maintain and repair the fermentation systems and supporting infrastructure as needed.
- Skilled at providing vessel maintenance (valves, gaskets, o-rings, calibration, mechanical seals, etc.)
- Experience with centrifuges and membrane filtration is desirable.
- Performs preventive maintenance and coordinates timing of activities with production staff.
