Position Summary: The Children’s Aid Society After School in Action (SONYC) Program at SU Campus, funded by the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development is an after-school enrichment program operating Monday through Friday, from 2:30pm to 6:00pm. The program offers academic support for students with their homework and subjects, additional educational instruction, social/emotional learning and the opportunity to engage in an array of enriching sports and art-based activities.
Salary: $15 - $25 (per hour)
Location: Salome Urena Campus - 4600 Broadway, New York, NY 10040
Responsibilities: The Facilitator is responsible for the supervision and care of (up to) 20 children, which comprise a group or club. A Facilitator is a leader, who commits to teaching by modeling and demonstrating characteristics that participants can learn from. It is essential that candidates applying for this position enjoy being around middle school age children, respects them as people, and seeks to include them in fun learning activities. In most cases, facilitators have an assistant, which they supervise and provide guidance to in day to day activities.
- Provide individual and group tutoring in areas such as reading, writing, mathematics, and study skills.
- Develop classroom and behavioral management skills.
- Implement professionally developed literacy-based curriculum.
- Develop relationships with children and their families.
- Help design, plan and lead the implementation of special projects in and out of program.
- Ability to be punctual, responsible, have a positive attitude and provide encouragement to children.
- Plan, teach, supervise, and organize games.
- Assist in activities or tasks necessary to ensure an orderly operation of the program (e.g. supervise children during supper and ensure all equipment is properly signed out, cleaned and returned).
- Attend regular staff meetings, trainings and work cooperatively with other staff members in the program and in the schools.
Qualifications:
- Pursuing an Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Social Work or related field.
- At least one-year experience working with children, tutoring, or teaching is highly preferred.
- Experience in developing lesson plans and curriculum a plus.
- Available from September through June.
