The Events & Special Program Manager position plans major events, including news conferences for the Mayor and the Orange County Commissioners. This includes arranging, staffing, promoting, and managing of signature events. This position functions as staff/liaison to major events, initiatives and related committees and supervises event support staff.

Work is performed with independent judgment and self-initiative under general supervision of the Communications Manager.


Representative Duties


  • Develops and coordinates high profile special events and large community events involving the Mayor and/or the Orange County Board of County Commissioners.
  • Serves as the lead for signature events and special projects, such as the State of the County and the Economic Summit, Mayor's Special Events, the Mayor's Annual Toy Drive, and community parades. This position also implements an average of 25 BCC meetings annually, and other projects, including but not limited to updating of the Source, and much more (e.g., news conferences regarding issues or updates on Mayor initiatives).
  • Serves as point person and/or Floor Manager for Mayor's signature events at other facilities - such as the History Center and Convention Center - to ensure quality, show flow, etc.
  • Oversees equipment in the Chambers as well as the Outlook calendars for the Chambers and Room 105.
  • Serves as the liaison during joint events between Orange County and other municipalities and organizations or special announcements.
  • Coordinates speakers, event registration and catering orders, setup and clean-up and other logistics for events and programs.
  • Prepares communication materials including special events checklists and briefing sheets for events. Researching, writing and coordinating news releases, talking points, fliers, programs, PowerPoint presentations and other material as needed.
  • Plans and implements event specific social media outreach as needed.
  • Supervises event support staff including regular and temporary employees or student interns.
  • Works closely with the Facilities Management Division and Orange TV to oversee events that take place at the County Administration Center.
  • Continually looks for ways to improve event quality as well as community outreach through signature events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications


Bachelors degree from an accredited institution in Public or Business Administration, Hospitality Management, Communications, or a closely related field and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in events planning, public relations, or media relations in a professional or business setting to include one year as a lead or supervisor. Experience in government and knowledge of political protocol.


Preferences


  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining community relations.
  • Experience in the implementation of social media outreach.

$61,256.00 - $77,521.60 Annually
