Summary:

An Emergency Department Tech will assist with care of patients from infancy to geriatric under the direction of the Registered nurse and Emergency Department physician. The Tech will also be responsible for clerical and receptionist duties. He/she must hold a current CNA certification or current EMT-B certification.
Experience/Education Requirements:
  • 1 year of experience as a CNA or EMT-B
License or Certification Requirements:
  • Qualify in one of the following: certified as a CNA, CMA, or current certification as EMT-B
  • BLS certification required and kept current

Responsibilities:

  • Answers patient call lights.
  • A nswers telephones and directs appropriately.
  • K nowledge of trauma protocol for level I and II regarding calls necessary to notify trauma team members and required documentation.
  • N otifies ED registration upon squad arrival/patient admit.
  • P ages physicians/ancillary services as needed.
  • P articipation in Performance Improvement Activities including point of care testing QI; proficiency in all point of care testing.
  • P erforms 12 lead EKG.
  • P repares patient for RN/physician assessment by obtaining vital signs, assisting patient into gown, performing pulse ox, orthostatics, etc.
  • P repping and transporting instruments to sterile processing daily.
  • S tocking rooms during each shift.
  • R ecords all pertinent patient information into computer system.
  • F amiliar with discharge/transfer requirements, scanning records into EPIC.
  • R esponds to emergency codes.
  • S et up of suture/procedure trays, wound cleansing/irrigation, removal of simple sutures.
  • S plint/immobilizers/crutch training.
  • T ransportation of patients without cardiac monitor to x-ray, nursing units via assisted ambulation cart and/or wheelchair.
  • U tilizes safety restraints appropriately and is familiar with required documentation to assist the RN with monitoring departments.
  • V isual acuity, patient exams.
  • If licensed as an EMT, administers nebulizer treatments when ordered.

Lifting patients off their beds that are unable to move independently is done with assistive lifting equipment. Horizontal movement of patients to and from carts/beds who are unable to move independently is done with assistive lifting equipment. Carry charts 25-150' waist high. Filled laundry bags are filled half full so as not to weigh more than 35#. Carry fire extinguisher up 2-5 floors and several yards in an emergency.
