Job description

PURPOSE AND SUMMARY: Operates equipment and performs maintenance at the landfill, transfer station, and closed landfill sites.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Operates equipment such as loaders, dump trucks, dozer, loader, backhoe, skid steer, tractor/mower, waste and recycling compactors. May operate other equipment as needed.

2. Loads semi-trailers with waste and recyclables to be shipped to the host landfill and recycling facilities.

3. Follows equipment operation, maintenance and safety procedures for all equipment and work tasks.

ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

1. Services, fuels, greases and performs minor repairs to equipment.

2. Performs general unskilled and semi-skilled labor as needed.

3. Accurately records daily time relating to labor, machinery and materials.

4. Performs other related duties as may be assigned.

WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

1. Reports to Solid Waste Operations Manager.

2. Works with general public, hauling contractors, vendors, and other County department staff.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, AND CERTIFICATION:

1. High school diploma or its equivalency.

2. Some related experience required.

3. Valid Wisconsin Class A or Class B Commercial Driver License with Airbrake Endorsement and without vehicle restriction, and minimum automobile insurance coverage as required by County.

4. State of Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Site Operator Certification or the ability to obtain certification within 12 months of employment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

1. Thorough knowledge in the operation and minor servicing of assigned equipment.

2. Thorough knowledge of safe work practices related to assigned duties.

3. Some knowledge of internal combustion engines, including the ability to make minor repairs and adjustments.

4. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisory personnel, customers and the general public.

5. Ability to work effectively and safely under limited supervision.

6. Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Ability to perform strenuous or heavy manual labor at various times during the shift.

2. Ability to perform work from a standing or walking position at various times during the shift.

3. Ability to perform work for the bulk of the shift which requires full manual dexterity in both hands and full use of both feet.

4. Ability to work in an environment with frequent exposure to unpleasant odors.

5. Ability to work in an environment with periodic exposure to adverse temperature and/or humidity extremes.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $22.07 - $24.56 per hour
