Job description

VADD Construction Services is looking for an innovative Electrical Design Engineer to work as an Owner’s Agent and take their skillset to the next level. VADD’s work is primarily for the commercial hyper scale data center customer, and Data Center construction is booming. We need help!

The right fit for us is a candidate who:

  • Enjoys challenges and utilizing resourcefulness to find answers and learn new things.
  • Is able to work and make sound decisions with minimal oversight.
  • Is comfortable giving something a shot, even if it means risking making a mistake.
  • Has an eye for what needs to be done and takes the initiative to do it.
  • Is a creative and innovative problem solver

VADD is a startup. Your role will cover many different aspects of hyperscale datacenter engineering design and construction workeragement. As the company grows your role will rapidly scale and the end goal is for you to run a team of engineers. The company’s founder has a background as a design Electrical Engineer and is currently providing engineering services primarily as an Owner’s Agent.

Your role would be mostly be the following:

  • Project management of other design engineers and design engineering firms.
  • Production of high level proof of concept drawings, calculations, and scopes of work
  • Peer review of other designer’s drawings both from a standpoint of completeness, constructability, and design concept.

Our ideal candidate loves getting a project started and hates the monotony of endless CAD and REVIT work. You’ve seen multiple projects through to the end and you understand the importance of starting a project strong and what it takes to end a project strong. You can explain difficult concepts in layman’s terms and, most importantly, when you don’t know an answer you aren’t afraid to tell people you don’t know and then follow up with the answer.

Our company mainly supports large hyperscale commercial customers (e.g. google, apple, facebook) and colocation customers (e.g. digital realty, raging wire) and the Veterans Affairs; however, we understand that this is a specialized construction area. So, while experience with these types of builds is great, candidates with diverse experience (e.g. industrial, SCIF, healthcare) and a strong understanding of construction and have a background in Design Engineering should apply. We’ll train you on the rest.

We are a small company: our teams work like a pickup basketball game and you’ll probably end up covering a lot of positions. You’ll typically be 10% outside your comfort zone, and we think that is a good thing.

We work all over the globe but 90% inside the US. You may have to travel, and only if it makes sense. There is no micromanagement here: you can work from your home or the beach as long as you get your job done.

Professional Requirements

  • A degree in Electrical Engineering (Professional Engineers License a huge plus)
  • 5-7 years of experience as a design engineer at some point (understand you might have moved on to something else)

Auxiliary Qualifications

Qualifications listed below, while not necessarily a requirement for this position in each circumstance, provide additional depth and value to the role. Let us know if you have them, but even if you don’t please apply anyway.

  • Construction Project Management Experience
  • PMP or other project management certification
  • A previous job where you worked in customer service such as a restaurant server, any hotel/hospitality industry job, or the service desk at Home Depot (even if it is in college)

Office Location and Schedule

  • This position’s home office is Ashburn, VA, but you can work or live anywhere.
  • This position requires weekday (Monday - Friday) attendance with some scheduling flexibility available.
