Summary:

This position is responsible for North Campus electrical shop operations, staff supervision, and performance of electrician duties, under the direction of the Construction Superintendent.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Prioritize, direct, manage, inspect, and verify work and craftsmanship of electricians and other assigned personnel. Ensure accurate time reporting of assigned personnel according to type of work being performed to accurately account for time/effort expended on various repair, maintenance, and construction initiatives. Assign areas and scope of responsibility to subordinates to manage workloads and work execution rates. Attend project related meetings as needed.

Execute work orders and follow up on work being performed in designated area of responsibility and plan details of work procedure, making sketches as required for complete and usable layout. Analyze all types of drawings, such as wiring diagrams/schematics, and operating/maintenance manuals to determine material replacement needs, assembly specifications and methods. Effect the best means of making repairs to minimize interruption of day-to-day work activities of occupants.

Compile and track all job or work order related costs to include material/part orders and labor expenditures to efficiently create cost estimating baselines for similar work. Research, vet, and recommend cost saving alternatives and standardization methods, parts, procedures that have a lasting impact on the campus.

Install electrical systems that operate on alternating or direct current circuits, generators, transformers, and appliances through panels, switches, meters, and circuit breakers. Perform the installation and servicing of electrical equipment and diagnoses problems, detect and replace defective parts, tests and adjusts equipment settings as required for proper operation. Perform the installation and servicing of electrical equipment while meeting all safety codes. Install and repair wiring, fire alarm systems, telephone, data transfer wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, and equipment. Replace, install, repair and test electrical circuits, equipment, appliances and lighting systems.

Assist in planning, scheduling, and procurement with some analysis of work procedures and execution rates. Recommend safety, energy, and process improvements. Coordinate with other electricians and trades on relevant work orders to effectively execute work requirements.

Perform basic pipe bending and support bracing for field installation. Provide access for future maintenance, and avoid unsightly, hazardous, and unreliable wiring, consistent with specifications and the “National Electrical Code.” Design and layout circuits, install fixtures, wiring conduits, motors, and other electric equipment and components with an eye for maintenance access and de-confliction with other trades work. Plan new or modified installations to minimize waste of material. Layout and install complex electrical power and control wiring installations.

Assist in the repair of facility-related electrical equipment, wiring, lighting, motors, and devices such as high voltage gear including 12,500/7200, 480/277V, 208/120V, and various low voltage control devices and systems. Assist in planning, scheduling, and procurement with some analysis of work procedures and execution rates. Recommend safety, energy, and process improvements.

Oversees and schedules/coordinates the location and marking existing utilities for all internal and external stakeholders per project requirements.

Assist other Foremen with staff training programs, materials lists and requisitions, and management of tools, equipment, and materials. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: 1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Experience sufficient to qualify as a journeyman electrician, with a minimum of nine years of actual work at the trade, including apprenticeship or vocational training. The trade for this purpose shall include work normally performed by Electricians i.e., installing, maintaining, and/or repairing electrical systems, generators, transformers, motors and other electrical/electronic controls, electrical switchboard and other apparatus utilizing electricity, electrical, electronic and direct digital control systems, fire and alarm systems, and associated electrical, electronic and fiber optic equipment.


Preferred Qualifications:
Possess a valid driver's license.

Ability to supervise, coach, and guide others.
Exercise judgement and lead decision making in selection of materials, tools, and methods.
Exceptional knowledge of how to use and maintain all tools and equipment assigned.
Upholds work progress according to accepted University standards.
Performs as the subject matter expert in accordance with the National Electrical Code.
Experience in troubleshooting and maintenance of electrical and mechanical equipment.
Knowledge base to maintain compliance with federal, state and local standards and regulations.
Must have the knowledge and abilities to know when an immediate shutdown of equipment is necessary to minimize damage or when temporary continued operation will have no harmful effects.
Ability to diagnose system malfunctions on electrical equipment and repair defective parts as necessary.
Perform and comply with all applicable job-related operating procedures and work instructions. Responsible for clean work sites of subordinates and electrical shop is left looking professional with all tools returned to where they belong.
Ability to read, interpret, and understand technical documents, blueprints, schematics, and drawings of plant equipment and basic University facilities. Able to read and understand operation standards, equipment manuals, wiring diagrams etc.
Basic computer skills to include Microsoft Word, Excel, Tablet based applications and email.
A working understanding of HVAC, boiler systems, and compressed air system power requirements.
