In general, the EHS Manager spends 70% of their time planning, directing, and coordinating the safety of personnel in our Lumber Mill. Duties and responsibilities include all aspects of safety and health, including evaluating site processes and equipment to determine controls needed to keep workers safe. The EHS Manager is responsible for ensuring that workers understand safe work procedures and are competent to safely carry out their assigned duties.

The other 30% is spent managing the requirement of environmental regulations our Mill. Their main responsibility is to make sure that the environmental regulations are following the standardized format of environmental health and safety regulations. The EHS Manager works to examine and locate the area of improvement in its environment sustainability practice, so that it runs in compliance with the guidelines formulated by federal, state, and local regulatory authorities.

What you will do:

The EHS Manager is responsible for ensuring that the workplace is monitored and is fully in compliance with all applicable OSHA standards, rules, and regulations to maintain safety in the manufacturing facility. To that end, these responsibilities include but are not limited to:


Safety

  • Responsible for directing and coordinating safety-related activities.
  • Use labels, signs, posters, floor marking, and color coding to warn employees about potential hazards.
  • Ensure that Safety Standard Operating Procedures (SSOPs) are maintained and communicated to employees.
  • Review and assist with safety measure introduction, which may include engineering controls, such as barriers or ventilation, personal protective gear, or special procedures.
  • Participate in workplace safety and health planning meetings.
  • Ensure managers and supervisors have the appropriate safety and health, accident prevention, and investigation training.
  • Administer corporate or site policies and procedures designed to promote worker health and safety as well as ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Work with the organization’s management team to evaluate and enforce policy conformance.
  • Develop measures and practices that prevent accidents and ensure compliance with OSHA standards.
  • Routinely monitor the workplace for hazardous safety and health conditions.
  • Ensure safety and health hazards are corrected, eliminated, or guarded.
  • Assess engineering controls, administrative controls, and PPE on an ongoing basis.
  • Assist management with the investigation of accidents.
  • Investigate all close calls and other safety-related incidents that have occurred within the accident area.
  • Ensure the results of safety inspections are documented; monitor the investigation of accidents and injuries; ensure that corrective actions are taken and provide recommendations for ways to prevent similar accidents.
  • Ensure that all accident reports are recorded in a timely, complete, and accurate manner.

Environmental

  • Overseeing the environment protection strategies implied by the organization as well as developing, modifying, and implementing the required strategies for ensuring corporate sustainability
  • Developing recycling schemes, pollution reduction and prevention program, and taking prompt action on sustainable procurement of environment related services
  • Coordinating the management of all the tasks related to pollution control, recycling processes, waste material management, environmental health management, energy conservation, and renewable energy management
  • Carrying out implementation and functional management of environmental policies and practices in the organization, ensure its authenticity, and validate it in compliance with environmental regulatory authorities
  • Auditing and analyzing the environmental performance reports, reporting the same to the internal staff, external clients, and environmental legislative bodies
  • Conducting impact assessment for identifying the environmental risk, and working towards managing the overall cost reduction in implementing the program
  • Managing environmental protection strategies with respect to organizational progress, taking a note of its effect on employee's security and budget assigned by the management
  • Creating awareness program in and outside the organization regarding environmental protection issues, methods to combat such environmental hazards, and generate a sense of responsibility towards protecting the environment
  • Determining the best possible solution for environment protection which reflects the best used corporate strategy, and goes in accordance with legislative, ethical, and social welfare
  • Liaising with regulatory authorities for conducting effective environment protection program in the organization, updating their knowledge regarding latest amendments in environment protection act, preparing drafts and detailed report for presenting it to regulatory bodies, etc.
  • Managing the team involved in environment protection program, coordinating with technical, scientific, and engineering staff members regarding the same
  • Must be able to manage and train the working staff to improve upon the environmental performance.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the General Manager.

Minimum qualifications you will need

  • Prefer a Bachelor’s Degree in a safety discipline with 5+ years manufacturing experience OR 10 years of manufacturing management experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Managerial/Supervisory experience (Preferably in Safety)
  • Thorough knowledge of Safety concepts and application
  • Leadership — ability to lead, take charge, and offer opinions and direction
  • Engaging others — ability to set and achieve goals through others
  • Innovation — demonstrates creativity and alternative thinking to develop new ideas for and answers to work-related problems

Working Conditions

  • Role requires a person to work in working conditions such as heat, cold, snow, rain, ice, frost, humidity, severe storms and so forth. Special working conditions may include regular evening and weekend work, shift work, working outdoors, working as a team regardless of challenge, and so forth. Exposure to noise, dirt, grease, water, and sawdust is common.

Physical requirements

  • Physical ability to perform the essential job functions of the position, which includes climbing stairs, navigating catwalks, working at heights up to 30 feet above the ground, lifting up to 50 pounds (from floor to shoulder height), stooping, and bending, carrying up to 30 pounds at least 40 feet.
