Summary/Objective

The Grant Writer is responsible for identifying, defining and developing funding sources to support existing and planned program activities as well as coordinate the development writing, and submission of grant proposals to third party entities. The Grant Writer is also responsible for securing new funding opportunities; having comprehensive knowledge of research, and the ability to distinguish and identify funding opportunities for special programs. Further, he or she will be responsible for preparation of proposals and grant applications, and administrative work in researching, identifying, developing and responding to public and private grant opportunities to support FREE, Inc.’s programs and mission.

Essential Job Functions

  • Research and understand the history, structure, objectives, programs and financial needs of the organization
  • Investigates all large corporate/foundation/government grant opportunities as to determine which grants are appropriate and if we are able to qualify for submission.
  • Completes grant applications.
  • Works with other departments as required to complete grant submissions – i.e. the fiscal department, operating teams.
  • Reviews grant documentation for accuracy and completeness.
  • Maintains and tracks grants that have been submitted in a database.
  • Follows up on grants after award date if we have received the determination.
  • Attends/facilitates grant announcement meetings and RFP development.
  • Attends debriefing on Grants not awarded to better position the agency for future grants.
  • In coordination with program division leaders and the Mission Advancement division, generate proposals and supporting documents in response to solicitations
  • Generate revenue for FREE’s programs and services through timely submission of well-researched well written and well-documented grant/fund raising proposals
  • Identify funding opportunities and new program areas to match organization's priorities
  • Serve as liaison to funding agencies or organizations, as needed
  • Provide Ad hoc support to promote the organization at key moments (e.g., fundraising events, publications, press engagements, ribbon-cuttings, etc.)
  • Monitor, measure and report performance of fundraising efforts, and assets against goals
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned

Additional Job Responsibilities

  • Submits weekly reports and weekly grant tracking updates.
  • Attends webinars and conferences as directed to increase knowledge regarding grants.
  • Provides information for the agency’s strategic report in relation to fiscal viability goals.
  • Performs additional responsibilities, as assigned.

Education, Work Experience, and Competencies

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, English, journalism, creative writing or relevant field
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in grant attainment and development or in related industry preferred.
  • Grant Proposal or Writing Sample required
  • Research - Outstanding research, writing, grammar, and editing skills
  • Organization - Highly organized with superb attention to detail; able to gather and analyze information skillfully
  • Time Management - Able to effectively multi-task and work under pressure, implement systems and follow up processes, and use independent judgement to produce quality work within tight deadlines
  • Relationship building -Exemplary interpersonal and networking skills
  • Solid working knowledge of database management, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Dynamic self-starter who can work independently and approach tasks creatively
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population, contribute to building a positive team spirit

  • Ability to travel, as required
