Director of Government Grants
Organization Description:
The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy is the nonprofit partner of the National Park Service overseeing the Golden Gate National Recreation Area — 82,000 acres of national parkland spanning the San Francisco Bay Area, including Ocean Beach, Crissy Field, and Alcatraz Island as well as Muir Woods National Historic Monument, and Fort Point National Historic Site. The Parks Conservancy is a membership organization created to preserve the Golden Gate National Parks, enhance the experiences of park visitors, and build a community dedicated to conserving the parks for the future.
With our local and federal partners, the Parks Conservancy is committed to the work of supporting Bay Area national parks as places where we can further racial and social justice, equity, and inclusion for our community and climate resilience for these protected lands.
Department Description:
The Director of Government Grants is part of the Development and Membership branch, currently a team of 13 staff members that leads our organization-wide fundraising efforts. This includes a robust range of programs – membership, major gifts, events, legacy gifts, grants, campaigns, One Tam, and other special fundraising efforts. The development team is critical to identifying, engaging, stewarding, and leveraging philanthropic, public, and individual support to continue to invest meaningfully in the work and mission of the Parks Conservancy in supporting our Bay Area national parklands, in San Francisco, Marin and San Mateo Counties. As part of this work, staff also lead a number of key volunteer committees to create shared ownership and deepen our community outreach and impact to meet and exceed revenue goals.
Position Overview:
Reporting to the Senior Director of Development & Membership, the Director of Government Grants serves as a key revenue-generating team member through securing government funding at the local, regional, state, and federal levels. The Director works cross-functionally with various program and project staff, with frequent coordination among partner agencies, including the National Park Service and Presidio Trust.
The Director will be a strategic thinker who will be in thought partnership with Parks Conservancy programs, projects, and partners and understand and be able to deploy funding in support of shared goals, focus areas, and values. The Director will manage existing relationships and develop new opportunities to build the Parks Conservancy’s current and future public financial resources. The Director also will work closely with the Director of Institutional Giving, who manages foundation and corporate grants, to coordinate our overall institutional giving approach.
Although this position will be oriented to meet the needs of the Parks Conservancy’s overall public grant needs, this position importantly supports the One Tam Initiative, a collaborative organized by the Conservancy that focuses on high-level agency partnership with the National Park Service, California State Parks, Marin County Parks, and Marin Municipal Water District to mobilize the skills and resources of the five partners and the community to care for the mountain’s long-term health. This latter role requires a high level of leadership and collaboration in an externally facing role to our partner agencies and staff, funding agency staff, and the One Tam Steering Committee.
This position is based in the Parks Conservancy’s headquarters at Fort Mason in San Francisco. The Parks Conservancy accommodates telework for this position with on-site and in-person work as needed.
