TITLE: Director of Development & Special Events
REPORTS TO: Chief Development & Communications Officer
CLASSIFIED: Exempt

JOB SUMMARY:
We are looking for a proactive, detail-oriented, and passionate Director of Development & Special Events who is enthusiastic about our organization’s mission and understands the importance this work has in driving change in our communities. The Director of Development & Special Events (DDSE) works directly with the Chief Development & Communications Officer in the distribution and execution of annual giving campaigns and is responsible for the planning, execution, and evaluation of special events for all units of the Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Plains, Inc. (Brookings, Flandreau, Vermillion, and Yankton). This includes working with local advisory councils, community members, organizations, sponsors, and staff in the success of each Club in a mission-oriented way.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership
- Actively participate and contribute to both Development and Corporate team by providing vision and direction for Club through position
- Distribute, implement, and follow-up on the annual individual and business campaign in all Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Plains (BGCNP) Units
- Lead, plan, execute, and evaluate special events preparation, sponsorships, ticket sales, volunteers, budget, and return on investment (ROI) for each BGCNP Unit
- Lead, plan, execute, and evaluate the annual spring phone-a-thon and fall Day of Giving fundraising events for each BGCNP Unit
- Management of Special Events intern and committees of volunteers
- Find and organize volunteers for smaller special events that support BGCNP
- Contribute to the planning and execution of the annual Resource Development and Marketing Plan, including the annual campaign and special event calendar
- Actively represent the organization including attendance at community events and membership in appropriate organizations as approved by the Chief Development & Communications Officer
- Upkeep of the BGCNP Unit email newsletters, website, and social media
Resource Development
- Assist the Chief Development & Communications Officer on public relations, operation campaigns, business campaigns, endowment campaigns, planned giving campaigns, and other public relations events or campaigns
- Directly solicit and secure the financial support of businesses, individuals, and sponsorships in all BGCNP Units
- Develop and maintain relationships with Boys & Girls Club local advisory councils, other organizations, donors, and potential donors in all BGCNP Units
- Assist the Chief Development & Communications Officer and Director of Grants & Stewardship in the stewardship plan
- Generate development reports and materials such as case statements or proposals
- Work with the Resource Development team in preparing content for engaging marketing materials including direct mail pieces, brochures, donor newsletters, etc.
- Support the BGCNP “Culture of Philanthropy”
Administrative
- Manage and upkeep of online donations, online special event registration, and other online payments for each BGCNP Unit
- Update and report out of the donor management system regarding giving and distribution of mailings, emails, or stewardship campaigns for each BGCNP Unit
- Social media management and upkeep of Facebook and LinkedIn for all BGCNP Units
- Additional projects assigned by supervisor
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:
1. Bachelor's Degree in Nonprofit or Hospitality/Event Management or related field from an accredited university, and/or work experience managing nonprofit programs and fund development
2. Event planning and fundraising experience preferred
3. High level of written and verbal communication skills to speak with donors and other stakeholders across the organization, including work with volunteers
4. Working knowledge of excel, outlook calendar, and other Microsoft products
5. Ability to take initiative, prioritize duties, and work independently while functioning as a member of a team in a fast-paced, forward-thinking work environment
6. Detail-driven and mission-focused approach to Resource Development
7. Good organizational and time management skills to help keep projects on track
8. Knowledgeable in fundraising techniques and sources of funding for non-profits
9. Knowledgeable in social media management
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be of the mental and physical capacity to observe, interact, and communicate with youth, staff, volunteers, parents etc. at the Club.
