JOB PURPOSE

Reporting directly to the Associate Executive Director, Programs, the Director of Arts and Culture works in partnership with the AED of Programs to curate a full season of diverse programming across artistic disciplines, arts education and new initiatives for the l4Y Theater. Additionally, the Director of Arts and Culture works with the Artistic Director of LABA Global and the Director of LABA NY, our resident company, to implement and produce LABA productions and events and will also partner with the Artistic Director of Older Adult Programs for Sirovich. The Director of Arts & Culture will spearhead the artistic vision of the theater at 14Y, as well as the coordination of ancillary arts initiatives that serve all aspects of programming at the Y; inclusive of one-off events, arts education programs, and additional programs as they relate to other areas of 14Y's programming. The Director of Arts and Culture has a wide knowledge of the cultural landscape in New York City, and has ties to artists, arts organizations, and institutions that can be leveraged to advance the scope of programming at the 14Y theater. SCOPE OF INFLUENCE

  • The Director of Arts and Culture will supervise the Director of LABA NY and will work with the AD of LABA, who is supervised by the AED of Programs.
  • Additional supervisees will include the Director of Production and the Theater Manager, as well as related theater staff.
  • Interfaces with the Executive Team at 14Y and the Educational Alliance, building and maintaining relationships.
  • Interfaces with all staff at 14Y and Sirovich, and will partner with additional programs such as Youth and Family to coordinate arts programs.
  • The Director of Arts and Culture will work closely with our Senior Director of Marketing to create an Arts & Culture marketing plan for all programs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNT ABILITIES

Artist Engagement, Programming & Production (50%)

  • Partner with the AED of Programs to enact the vision for the future of the Arts & Culture department.
  • Curate the annual season, build and maintain partnerships with outside companies and vendors in alignment with the mission of the theater.
  • Provide programmatic support for additional internal departmental events that take place in the theater, such as community engagement, youth and family, and development programs.
  • Incorporate the needs, concerns, and experiences of partners to best represent the Y as both a theater and a community center.
  • Support the LABA Program as our company in residence, line-producing special LABA productions and events.
  • Collaborate with the Director of LABA NY to infuse LABA ideology and artistry throughout programs beyond A&C, inclusive of New Country Day Camp and Preschool.
  • Collaborate with additional staff and executive team members as needed to align programming with our mission and values.

Theater Management & Administration Supervision (15%)

  • Supervises the Theater Manager, Director of Production and the Director of LABA NY.
  • Manages relationship with AD of LABA Global/consultant
  • Oversee the Director of Production in the daily management of partners, the facility, equipment and the hiring of ancillary staff.
  • Supervise the Theater Manager in tracking the budget, drafting of contracts, administrative tasks, partner relations, and in supervision of the box office.
  • Inform Operations and Security of upcoming programs and events that may need extra security attention or care.
  • Design the theater calendar for each fiscal year, working with the building at large to ensure communication with the building's schedule.
  • Conducts weekly check-ins with supervisees toward the continued professional development of staff members, as well as ensuring the ongoing efficiency and safety of all practices related to Arts and Culture and the space itself.
  • Collaborate with the AED of Operations to create the department budget, using programmatic goals to look ahead and forecast expected revenue and expenses.
  • Track the key revenue and budget goals monthly through the use of the Dashboard and update the AED of Programs on progress, as well as the Arts and Culture team to ensure that the budget goals are being met.
  • Assist in analyzing budgetary and audience data for strategic and programmatic planning.
  • Ensure there is adequate coverage at each event with regards to compliance and safety regulations.

Community Engagement/Audience & Financial Development (30%)

  • Coordinate with Marketing on implementing a strategy that is directed towards developing potential audiences for Arts and Culture.
  • Partner closely with Marketing to collect assets for all marketing materials, adhere to deadlines and align artists expectations with what is outlined in the artist/partner contract.
  • Seek community engagement and arts education opportunities. Seek opportunities for partnerships that connect aspects of our community with outside partners that can develop and deliver programming for the 14Y theater.
  • Research and track audience growth, as well as ticketing. Contribute strategically to the long-term planning of the Theater at the 14Y, including developing new ideas about festivals, space-sharing opportunities, community outreach, and classes.
  • Work with the Development Department to strategically go after funding to support the 14Y theater as well as specific initiatives and programs.

Other (5%)

  • Attend staff meetings and professional training as required.
  • Continues to work as an artist beyond the 14th Street Y, creating wide networks for future collaborations within this institution.
  • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS II Minimum Qualifications

  • A minimum of five to seven years' experience in theater programming, administration and production is required.
  • A minimum of five years' experience in NYC arts with a basic knowledge of the players within the cultural landscape.
  • A degree in Theater, Production or Arts Administration.
  • Possess contacts within the NYC arts community to aid in staffing as well as securing partnerships.
  • The ability to communicate effectively and collaboratively with individuals from a broad spectrum of diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate the ability to successfully manage multiple diverse projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to manage and communicate project budgets, negotiate contracts, and has a working knowledge of theatrical unions such as Actors Equity and the Dramatists Guild.
  • The ability to understand and support the mission and values of the 14th Street Y.
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, valuing all perspectives, and encouraging contributions from all team members.
  • Demonstrated cultural sensitivity in previous programming.
  • Self-motivated, highly efficient, strong attention to details.

COVID Vaccination Policy:

Educational Alliance mandates that all staffers are fully vaccinated in an effort to protect the health and safety of our community.
