The Director for Global Intellectual Property Operations will manage a team of legal professionals responsible for managing Vertex’s IP systems for patents and trademarks. The Director will also provide direct support to the Vice President for Intellectual Property in preparing information and presentations for the CEO and Chief Legal Officer. The Director will report directly to the Vice President for Intellectual Property and will be based in Boston. The position can be either full time in the office or hybrid colleague (3-days in the office).
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Manage a team of 5+ legal professionals responsible for docketing, annuities, filing formalities for domestic and international patent and trademark applications
- Responsible for implementing projects and efficiencies across the team, partnering with department attorneys and external stakeholders to optimize processes
- Acts as a liaison between line manager and other company executives, to ensure alignment and coordination on a wide variety of cross-functional initiatives
- Supports line manager in defining and developing high-impact executive communications, including for internal and external audiences; may include presentations for CEO and Chief Legal Officer and other Executive Committee members
- Works closely with department colleagues and computer solutions on developing the technology solutions for the IP department as well as coordinating the implementation of new solutions
- Leads and/or manages special projects and high-profile initiatives, as appropriate
- Ensures that IP policies and procedures are being followed and met on a day-to-day basis by the group in accordance with established guidelines and practices
- Oversee the integrity of the docket database, which includes accuracy and compliance with the Rules of Practice as governed by government agencies and within Vertex’s established procedures.
- Maintain a thorough knowledge of the docket database to create specialized reports and make appropriate changes as necessary
- Maintain knowledge of USPTO procedural changes; perform research to clarify patent rules; and serve as an expert on IP procedures and regulations
- Develop training courses for new and existing docketing staff to ensure that the docketing staff are updated on new rules and/or requirements to enable them to complete their day-to-day responsibilities accurately and timely
- Oversee an annual patent portfolio review working closely with the attorneys and implementing approved portfolio changes in a timely manner
- Prepares the annual IP department budget in collaboration with the financial business partner. Responsible for monitoring and recasting of the budget multiple times over the calendar year
- Responsible for supporting engagement and billing inquiries from third-party vendors, including outside counsel
- Keeps line manager and other executive stakeholders informed on key accomplishments, risks, and next steps
Knowledge and Skills
- Proven project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities
- Demonstrated analytical and information technology skills
- Track record of accountability and sound judgment with demonstrable experience taking ownership of issues and providing timely, actionable follow-up
- Demonstrated ability to be an effective manager of multiple reports
- Strong interpersonal skills to communicate complex concepts and negotiate with others mainly internally and externally
- Outstanding communication of information and ideas, both written and verbal, to diverse audiences
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Typically requires 12 years of experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience
