About the Work Unit

The Division of Criminal Justice (DCJ) provides assistance to state and local agencies in the criminal justice system through grants, research and policy development.
DCJ is comprised of the following offices: Adult and Juvenile Justice Assistance, Community Corrections, Domestic Violence Offender and Sex Offender Management, Office of Research and Statistics, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives, Administration, and Victims Programs.
About the Job

This position guides the development of policies and practices in community corrections, offender treatment, victim response, and criminal justice research and evaluation. This position leads and oversees a team of professionals working in grants, technical assistance, and direct service provision. This position represents the CDPS and the state both formally and informally in work with other state agencies, community representatives, federal departments, national associations, and the legislature. This position is responsible for the budget, personnel management and general operation of the Division of Criminal Justice and contributes to the overall management of the CDPS as a member of the Executive Team.

Key Responsibilities

Represents the Department/Division at a national level including membership in the National Criminal Justice Association, participates in and presents to national conferences, and participates in multi-state collaborations on criminal justice, juvenile justice and victims of crime issues. This position provides information and education to members of the Colorado federal delegation.

Develops, recommends, and reviews state-wide policies and proposals relating to criminal justice, both in legislation and general business practices. Works closely with other individuals and entities in the legislative process including the Colorado District Attorney's Council, the Attorney General's Office, the Colorado Organization for Victims' Assistance, the Colorado State Public Defender, State Judicial, and other executive branch agencies.

Provides staff support and direction for the Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice, sets priorities, arranges sub-committees, analyzes legal implications of recommendations, and participates as a sub-committee leader and participant as appropriate.

Performs as Appointing Authority in the administration of corrective or disciplinary actions that affect the pay, status or tenure of DCJ staff. Performs direct supervision including performance management of assigned staff, and indirect supervision of all DCJ employees.

As a member of the CDPS Executive team, helps formulate and implement Department policies, set priorities, and maximize efficiencies. Consults with Executive Director, Deputy Director and other Division Directors.
Represents the Division and the Department on multiple committees and boards.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Eight (8) years of progressive professional experience in leading complex organizations and diverse teams, and planning, developing, directing and implementing projects that are in alignment with organizational goals and result in service optimization.

OR

Four (4) years of progressive professional experience in leading complex organizations and diverse teams, and planning, developing, directing and implementing projects that are in alignment with organizational goals and result in service optimization AND a Bachelor's Degree in any field from an accredited institution.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Requires successful completion of a background investigation that includes a polygraph exam, a fingerprint based criminal history search.
  • Must be Colorado resident at the time of application.
