The AFRL Materials and Manufacturing Directorate seeks to hire a motivated Research Engineer in the Digital Manufacturing & Supply Chain Branch (AFRL/RXMD) of the Manufacturing & Industrial Technologies Division. This position will be filled at the DR-02 (GS-12-13 equivalent) level and is located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH. This position may be filled as a 5-year Modified Term Appointment (new government hires, current government term employees, etc.) with the option to later convert to a permanent appointment.

Position duties include, but are not limited to:
- Performs in-house research and development as a member of the Digital Manufacturing Research Team, developing and leading research projects in the areas that include advanced manufacturing, design optimization, and process control.
- Explores the integration of physics-based modeling for human expertise, artificial intelligence, and machine learning into digital manufacturing toolchains.
- Facilitates modularity and reuse of software that enables digital manufacturing and automation.
- Design for Manufacturing
- Designs approaches for manufacturing control in cluttered and noisy environments, including integration of sensors and feedback control.
- Participates in strong technical communication and collaboration amongst the Digital Manufacturing Research Team, RXMD, and the broader Air Force community.
- Participates in leading the research community of digital manufacturing through conference talks, publications, and external collaborations.
- Helps expand the current programmatic vision through awareness of future trends in their research community tied to their core competencies.

Required Qualifications
- US Citizenship
- Possess a professional science or engineering (S&E) degree, in a relevant technical field, from an accredited (or ABET accredited for engineering) academic institution
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance (for new hires); Possess and maintain a Secret security clearance (for current employees)
- This is an Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) position requiring Level 1 – Foundational certification in the Engineering and Technical Management stall. Applicants must list all completed APDP certifications on resume. Selectee will have 3 years to meet the APDP certification requirements of the position.

Desired Qualifications
- PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Experience with advanced manufacturing techniques, such as additive manufacturing, metamorphic manufacturing, robotic assembly, etc.
- Experience with automation, especially robotics.
- Experience with Python, C++, and/or C#.
- Experience in applied control theory and/or optimization, including algorithm development for control and/or optimization.
- Experience developing, implementing, and/or using artificial intelligence and machine learning approaches in manufacturing or design applications.
- Demonstrated publication record and community engagement through contributed conference presentations.
