Job Summary:
Working within the DevOps team you will help Markel recognize, implement, and add value through the use of DevOps. Whether assisting our internal customers on a global basis, helping to build a DevOps center of excellence, through to improving and maintaining our DevOps service catalog.

You will have the opportunity, to grow, inspire, develop, consult, and help shape the future of DevOps at Markel.
As a DevOps Engineer, you will be working closely together with product teams, and be creating and maintaining highly scalable DevOps solutions and managed services. This is an incredibly exciting opportunity to join a team that is going down a new path, with new challenges, and enormous opportunities.
You will implement the automation to build and maintain self-service platforms, both in cloud and Legacy environments. You will also assist development teams in creating ci/cd pipelines that support the goals of product delivery.
Ideally, you will be results-driven, have some experience in building IT infrastructure, love automation, and would thrive in an autonomous, collaborative environment.
What you will need to have
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including simple solutions to complex situations
  • Serious attention to detail, strong commitment, and the ability to learn and innovate
  • Passion for new technologies
  • Some experience in building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Azure DevOps, TeamCity, NuGet, MSBuild, Jenkins
  • Some programming/scripting experience using languages such as Python, Java, .NET

What would be desirable
  • Experience and/or knowledge of Azure
  • An understanding of IaC and Terraform
  • Experience in providing support and consultancy from a technical perspective
What you’ll do
  • Drive the implementation of DevOps technologies to enable and improve the efficiency of fully automated builds.
  • Implement/integrate modern DevOps techniques to improve platform efficiency, performance, and availability.
  • Utilize Terraform/Jenkins to enable core systems to scale out with business requirements.
  • Help define, design, and implement DevSecOps and ensure our customers develop secure, robust, resilient systems and solutions.
  • Support development teams with build & deployment best practices eg branching strategy, testing methodology, CI/CD, and pipelines.
  • Engage in and improve the whole life cycle of services, from inception and design, through deployment, operation, and refinement.
  • Help to define processes and standards, following Open-Source best practices, and keeping abreast of industry trends.
  • Drive adoption of key engineering best practices, supporting team members to improve quality, efficiency, and reliability of deliverables.
  • Develop standardized approaches, patterns, and blueprints to secure design, scripted deployment, and maintenance tasks;
  • Help leverage DevOps SaaS platforms such as Azure DevOps, Artifactory, and CloudBees to offer value-added services to our internal global customer base.
Education
  • Required - Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems,other related field or military experience
Certification
  • Insurance certifications or affiliation with industry group a plus
Work Experience
  • Experience assembling solutions using custom development, off the shelf systems, and 3rd party integrations
  • 3+ years coding in multiple programming languages such as C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
  • 3+ years using frameworks such as .NET, Grails, Node.js, or Flask
  • 3+ years of experience with relational databases and SQL – MS SQL Server preferred
  • DevOps, CI/CD, test automation and cloud deployment
  • Rapid prototype sprints to deliver new innovations to market
  • Experience setting up cloud-based innovation / sandbox environments for experimentation
  • Familiarity with design thinking and customer centric design

W ork location is flexible if approved by the Company, except that position may not be performed in Colorado.
