Job Summary and Qualifications

  • Stains, mounts, and studies cells of human body to detect evidence of cancer, hormonal abnormalities, and other pathological conditions, following established standards and practices: Prepares microscopic slides from specimens of blood, scrapings, or other bodily exudates, and fixes and stains slide to preserve specimen and enhance visibility of cells under microscope.
  • Examine specimens to detect abnormal hormone conditions.
  • Examine cell samples to detect abnormalities in the color, shape, or size of cellular components and patterns. Evaluate cells for the presence of cancer, precancerous changes or infections
  • Prepare and analyze samples, such as Papanicolaou (PAP) smear body fluids and fine needle aspirations (FNAs), to detect abnormal conditions.
  • Provide patient clinical data or microscopic findings to assist pathologists in the preparation of pathology reports.
  • Assist pathologists or other physicians to collect cell samples such as by fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies.
  • Quality Assurance in the laboratory including the maintenance of the system in accordance with the requirements of the College of the American Pathologists and preparation for site visits.
  • Prepare slides and reports in a timely fashion, ensuring Q. C. are met.
  • Maintain procedures and records to meet all regulatory standards.
  • Perform other duties as necessary for efficient operation of the department.
  • Actively seeks ways to control costs without compromising patient safety, qualify of care or the services delivered.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the occurrence reporting system. Uses system to report potential patient safety issues.
  • Follows established guidelines for reporting a significant medical error or unanticipated outcome in the patient’s care which results in patient harm.
  • Attends in-service presentations and completes all mandatory education requirements. Uses Performance Improvement Plan to improve patient safety.
  • Regular, Punctual and dependable attendance.
  • Prepare and maintain reagents and equipment.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Two year Associate Degree required
  • Florida Licensed Cytologist required
  • C.T. (ASCP) preferred
  • 1-3 years preferred experience in cytology
  • Good interpersonal, customer relation, & technical skills
