JOB PURPOSE or JOB SUMMARY:

Control System Engineers are responsible for designing and analyzing control systems, verifying and implementing code, fixing malfunctions, explaining and providing information, and analyzing and researching designs.

Control System Engineers tasks involve development of the FDS (Functional Design Specification), control system design, network architecture, instrumentation specification, PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) programming, SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) design, HMI (Human Machine Interface) implementation, data management, reporting, FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) simulation, and process sequencer pinning charts.

Control system engineers should also have knowledge of control systems and feel comfortable working with electronics, computers, software, hardware, and technology in general. Other skills that will help control system engineers include time management, organization, ability to cooperate with others as well as work independently, ability to think on their feet and solve challenging problems, and the ability to work on many things at once.

Upon completion of the installation phase of a project, Control System Engineers participates in commissioning activities in conjunction with the process department, on site. Such activities include program unload, HMI implementation, network configuration, I/O checkout, VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) configuration, troubleshooting, passivation support, classroom training, system testing, and support.

Control Systems Engineer III designs, develops, and supervises all aspects of the control system. Control Systems Engineer III can identify tasks required on a project and relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish the tasks. Additionally, they provide technical support to other engineers and customers, resolves problems related to projects, and minimizes delays and unexpected costs. Their responsibilities include assistance of standards and procedures, providing technical support when necessary, and generating required tasks for others as a lead on a project. Control Systems Engineer III has 6 to 9 years of experience in the field or related area.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

Proposal Development

  • Design and review Control System Design based on P&ID
  • Design and review control panel equipment specification and cost analysis
  • Develop and review control panel equipment & labor cost estimation
  • Technical review of junior tiers work on design and estimations

Project Development

  • Design and review of Functional Design Specification
  • Design and review PLC code
  • Design and review sequencer pinning documentation based on process design
  • Design and review electrical schematics and controls equipment
  • Design and review of control system network architecture
  • Sets Project Milestones for FDS, Programming and FAT tasks
  • Leads Functional Design Specification meetings
  • Leads Factory Acceptance Test simulation
  • Design I/O Checkout list creation
  • Schedule, assign, and approve project tasks and deadlines

System Commissioning

  • Leads commissioning activities
  • Leads training activities
  • Close-out activities support
  • Review and completes checklist

Control Standards

  • Identifies, coordinates and reviews in continuous improvements of new and existing Control standards to be utilized by all junior tiers

Relevant Experience

  • 2 to 9 Years
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Engineer In Training Certification (EIT)
  • Control Systems Engineer / Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Certified Controls Engineer (CCE)
  • Control Systems Engineer (ISA)
  • Ignition Core/Gold Certified
