Overview:
Salary: $52,000 - $75,000
Schedule: 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM (remote role after 6 months of onsite training)
The Consumer Mortgage Underwriter plays a vital role in improving the financial lives of Suncoast Credit Union members. Key responsibilities include reviewing and decisioning consumer mortgage loan requests in accordance with applicable guidelines. This role monitors updates to policies and requirements, developing necessary procedural improvements. An ideal candidate has keen attention to detail verifying accurate information to complete loans in compliance with credit union policies, third-party guidelines, and regulatory laws.

Responsibilities:
  • Conduct detailed analysis of loan files for competency and accuracy
  • Verify loan data satisfies the credit union, mortgage insurance, and third-party conditions prior to final underwriting completion and closing
  • Underwrite mortgage loans according to the credit union, mortgage insurance, and third-party guidelines
  • Review property appraisals for accuracy and acceptability by the credit union or insurer as appropriate loan security
  • Ensure the origination and processing staff meet underwriting standards on each loan in compliance with the credit union and private insurance guidelines
  • Maintain an acceptable predetermined loan delinquency ratio
  • Monitor changes to the credit union and private insurance requirements or guidelines
  • Create and develop changes to policies or procedures
  • Update credit union manuals to reflect changes and ensure information is disseminated to pertinent staff
  • Train origination and service center staff with proficient loan origination processes for mortgage products
  • Maintain knowledge and understanding of current trends, laws, and issues affecting the area of expertise
  • Attend educational events to increase professional knowledge
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance, or a related field (A comparable combination of work experience and training may be substituted for education requirements)
  • 3+ years of progressively responsible experience in mortgage lending, including experience as a mortgage underwriter
  • Advanced level of independent lending authority
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, deal effectively with competing and changing priorities to meet deadlines
  • Accurate, detail-oriented, and organized with task management
  • Ability to analyze and resolve difficult or complex problems
  • Good written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills to interact effectively with members, staff, vendors, and government regulators

Safe Act Statement
This position requires the employee to register as a mortgage loan originator with the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System and Registry (NMLS). The employee will obtain a unique identifier from the registry before engaging in mortgage loan originator activities. The employee must maintain and renew the registration on an annual basis, provide updated registration information with the registry on a timely basis, and provide a unique identifier to consumers as required by applicable SAFE Act regulations and Suncoast Credit Union policies and procedures.
