Role

The Communications Associate will serve as a communications generalist, supporting all aspects of the Communications Office by creating first drafts of materials, ensuring accuracy and quality of materials, supporting BPHC programs and partners with communications needs, and supporting communications projects from start to finish. This position also assists in project management and adherence to editorial calendars.

Program

The Communications Office is responsible for internal and external communications for the Boston Public Health Commission. The Office works closely with the Commission's Bureaus, as well as various City departments, to amplify public health messages and BPHC programs and services.

Duties

  • Draft a wide range of communications materials in support of communications projects and initiatives. Materials include, but are not limited to, blogs and web copy, internal staff-wide emails, press advisories, video scripts, text for promotional and educational materials, social media copy.
  • Regularly update BPHC web pages (boston.gov/bphc) to ensure information is up to date.
  • Ensure graphics and other visuals are to up-to-date by proactively monitoring and providing information.
  • Support the distribution of and improve access to internal communications and resources for staff.
  • Seek out and compile data, facts, and research to support communications materials.
  • Partner with program staff to brainstorm communications ideas and guide the creation of program-led communications projects.
  • Review and copy edit materials as needed.
  • Facilitate the creation of translated materials and translation resources.
  • Maintain and track inventory of all BPHC materials, including translated material.
  • Support the production of multimedia and digital projects.
  • Provide communications support to external and internal events.
  • Assist in maintaining editorial calendars and support adherence to communications workplans.
  • Create and encourage adherence to project timelines and workplans
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Work to help BPHC become an antiracist organization by meeting or exceeding the standards set by the BPHC Anti-Racism Policy.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a communications-related field; OR equivalent work experience
  • One (1) to three (3) years of experience working in public relations, social media management, marketing, content creation and management, or other writing-forward positions. Experience working in government or public health policy a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, and a close attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Experience working on long term projects and meeting deadlines.
  • Experience with content management systems and basic design tools.
  • Ability to work some evenings, weekends, and attend events across the city.
  • Passionate commitment to health equity and racial/social justice issues.
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about the role of public health in addressing racism, the social determinants of health, and inequities in health outcomes as well as strategies to advance racial justice and health equity.
Preferred or Plus:
  • Proficiency in a language other than English is a plus
  • Experience in public health communications a plus.
