In support of the USDA-funded project Building Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities in South Carolina, the Soil Greenhouse Gas Field Technician will work on a multi-disciplinary team that monitors soil carbon stocks and greenhouse gas data collection in beef cattle systems. The Field Technician will lead the measurement of soil greenhouse gas fluxes using an automated, multi-chamber, LICOR system, and smart-chambers. Other duties as assigned. This position is based out of the Edisto Research and Education Center in Blackville, SC, but involves frequent travel within South Carolina and interaction with growers.

JOB DUTIES:


55% - Essential - Transport of the LICOR system to farms at weekly intervals, assembly, basic troubleshooting, data collection, and initial data processing.

20% - Essential - Assist, support and collect soil and forages samples and additional livestock and forage management information collection from each farm. Support and assist the work conducted by graduate students and postdoctoral fellows on-farm.

15% - Essential - Repairs, cleans and provide maintenance and organization to the facilities and storage of samples. Communicates storage and product needs.

10% - Essential - Supports and collects data as directed by project leader(s). Assist with organization of workshops and educational activities.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:


Education - Bachelor's Degree - Agronomy, Soil Science, Plant Sciences, or Animal Sciences


PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:


Education - Master's Degree - Agronomy, Soil Science, Plant Sciences, or Animal Sciences

Experience - Relevant experience with flux measurement and related equipment, and data loggers as well as experience with farm, livestock and/or forage management is preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:


Field work required for this position is physically demanding and may require carrying an analyzer up to 50 pounds in agricultural fields in hot, humid conditions.

WORK SCHEDULE:


Standard Hrs: 37.5; Anticipated salary: $50,000

ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL LEVEL


Normal Operations

Required to follow emergency facility closure and modified operations directives, and not normally expected to work on-site during emergency situations.
