Job Summary:
- This is a position responsible for cleaning floors, classrooms, stairwells and restrooms to maintain a safe and sanitary environment.
- Cleaners are responsible for the cleanliness of assigned areas and maintaining the areas in a safe and sanitary condition.
Nature of Work:
Under general supervision, a Cleaner is responsible for the cleanliness, and orderliness of an assigned specific area in District building. Cleaners are generally assigned to one specific location, but occasionally may be asked to work at another District building. The work requires a degree of initiative since cleaners are expected to work independently in the performance of normal work activities. Instructions are received from the Manager of Facilities on matters of policy and new assignments. The school custodian and/or the building administrator give daily routine instructions. Performance feedback is received through occasional review of methods and results.
Duties:
- Routine housekeeping and washroom sanitation of a school district owned building.
- Typical duties will be sweep, mop and scrub floors and other surfaces; clean and dust furniture, windows, doors, trim and related furnishings; use buffing machines and walk behind floor scrubbing machines; clean and service lavatories, toilet rooms and restrooms; move furniture, supplies and miscellaneous equipment as directed; collect and dispose of paper and refuse; paint; clean and wax furniture and do related work, as required.
- Other facility-related duties as assigned by a supervisor.
- May be required to close and secure the building windows and door and set the security alarm.
- Personnel performing work in this classification are usually assigned to second shift work, however, when school is not in session the cleaners usually work first shift.
Desirable knowledge, skills and abilities:
- A working knowledge of principles, materials, methods and procedures used in general building cleaning. Ability to work independently, with little supervision.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safe work practices; be able to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions.
