About the Role*
The Chief Equity and People Officer (CEPO) will lead our organization-wide strategy to ensure equity lives in all aspects of our organizational strategy, practices, and ways of working. This individual will support teammates, including leadership, to drive systems-level change across an organization serving approximately 5,000 students.

The CEPO will develop and execute a cohesive organizational-wide strategy to integrate our Equity Commitments, commitment to anti-racism, and values into our practices, policies, and decision-making and lead the vision for attracting, retaining, sustaining, and developing diverse, values-aligned teammates.

The Chief Equity and People Officer will oversee the teams responsible for equity and DEI strategies, Talent, and HR-related policies, programs, and partnerships. The Chief Equity and People Officer will serve on the senior leadership team at STRIVE Public Schools and report directly to the CEO.

In this role, you will: *

  • Equity Strategy
  • Lead the organization’s equity strategy in collaboration with the STRIVE-wide leadership team and develop a cohesive set of initiatives that span regions and departments to advance equity goals
  • Disseminate internal data and analysis to leaders and teammates related to student achievement, college enrollment, graduation rates, student persistence, and family engagement to highlight bright spots and encourage successful practices throughout the organization, address gaps across lines of difference, and continuously improve systems and programs.
  • Stay abreast of research/theory and best practices in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and anti-racism work, especially in K-12 education, professional learning, career pathways, and pipeline development.

Learning & Development*

  • Develop and implement a clear, compelling, and inclusive onboarding process that grounds all new employees in our shared values and approaches.
  • Define and develop infrastructure and approach for the adult learning all teammates experience at various points at STRIVE to support their growth and development in delivering on our equity vision, antiracist stance, values, & equity commitments.
  • Support teammates with frameworks, tools, metrics, and progress monitoring systems to collectively deliver on elements of an equity strategy and embody anti-racist leadership and decision-making.

Talent Management*

  • Recruitment & Hiring:
  • Develop a multifaceted recruitment strategy focusing on building a strong pipeline of diverse and qualified candidates across all levels and functions of the organization.
  • Develop strategies for targeted recruitment, hiring, and retention that support BIPOC talent to ensure our teams are reflective of the communities we serve.
  • Provide strategic support to department leaders throughout the hiring process to ensure equitable and effective hiring practices. Ensure that we use an anti-racist lens during all stages of the recruitment, onboarding, and evaluation process.
  • Cultivate State-wide strategic partnerships to support pipelines.
  • Create pathways to ensure that staff at all levels of the organization have the opportunity to advance and that career pathways are communicated and implemented in ways that are equitable and inclusive, and supported by credentialing services as needed.
  • Assess compensation and advancement disparities and partner with the Finance team to support equitable compensation programs.
  • Spearhead opportunities to understand and probe teammate experiences (annual survey) and identify opportunities to improve the experiences and satisfaction of our teammates.

Human Resources_

  • Incorporate an equity, anti-racist lens into all aspects of HR strategy, implementation, and communication, including onboarding, the employee life cycle, benefits, credentials, and employee relations.
  • Communicate new and existing HR policies through various strategies such as workshops, webinars, manuals, handbooks, videos, e-mails, etc.
  • Partner with the Data and Information Systems team to streamline processes, increase automation, and support customer service.
  • Address teammates' concerns and complaints promptly with coaching and support for teammates and managers.
  • Partner with external legal partners on employee matters as needed.

  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and influence others by interacting with various stakeholders.
  • Equity-centered leadership skills grounded in empathy, inquiry, fair process, and host leadership; interest in and ability to identify and interrupt racist practices in their work and areas of influence.
  • Deep understanding of and track record of leading effective change management practices.
  • Utilizes numerous data sets, quantitative and qualitative, to inform decision-making.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal; comfortable speaking in front of large groups.
  • Comfortable having difficult conversations with empathy, an inquiry mindset, and the ability to move toward learning and resolution.
  • Willingness to “get your hands dirty” and understanding that no task is too big or too small.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Qualifications*

  • Minimum educational level
  • Bachelor’s degree with equity work expertise
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • *

Experience required*

  • Five + years in senior leadership, including managing multiple direct reports, leading a related people-centered function, and working with a senior leadership team.
  • Experience in K-12 public education required; school and/or CMO/District leadership strongly preferred
  • Experience leading equity strategy development at a systems level.
  • Deep expertise in multiple domains of People and Equity work including equity strategy and leadership, employee relations, employee services, talent/ recruiting, credential services, HR, and leadership development.

Salary*

  • This is a full-time benefits-eligible position with a salary range of $145,000-165,000. Exact salary will be determined based on experience and track record of strong performance in other roles.
