Position: Chief Development Officer

General Purpose:

The Chief Development Officer (CDO), under the limited supervision of the CEO, provides organizational vision, leadership and strategic direction ensuring the organization meets its Mission through providing abundant resources. Incumbent has direct responsibility for all Marketing and Resource Development activities. May be acting CEO if/when needed.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Leadership- Provides exceptional executive level leadership and corresponding direction to the team and leadership volunteers by implementing both the vision and strategies set forth. Serves as a role model of the Club’s mission, vision, values, and organizational culture. Leads organization with direction, purpose and confidence. Is present in all key decision making process and sets the tone and vision for the short and long term. Leads key initiatives and committees with the Board.

Strategic Direction & Planning- Develops and implements a multi-year plan for appropriate departments in alignment with organizational goals. Recommends strategic and tactical changes and new/innovative approaches as needed to achieve overall goals.

Supports the execution and coordination of overall strategies addressing:

Community & youth needs

Priority areas – geographic & services

Management of resources

Gaps in capacity/infrastructure

Leads the execution and coordination of overall strategies addressing:

Necessary partnerships

Resources needed

Board Development-Assist the CEO and Board in recruiting and developing effective Board Members who actively govern while ensuring there are sufficient resources to meet the Mission and related strategies. Lead & staff key board committees as assigned. Manage all process, tools & communication for successful board engagement, recruitment and assessment

Resource Development - Through the Senior Resource Development Professional, attains adequate financial support and resources to meet operating and capital needs, with an effort to create reserves. Seeks a balance of resources protecting the organization from being overly reliant on one source. Effectively communicates the organizations collective interests and values to a broad diversity of stakeholders. Develops, maintains & leads implementation of Annual Development Plan.

Individual Giving through direct Annual Fund and special gifts & special events

Capital Campaigns

Corporate giving

Foundation giving

Government partnerships & grants

Stewardship of current donors

Volunteers

Planned giving

Marketing & Public Relations - Through the Senior Marketing Professional, develops and maintains positive Public Relations using the media and marketing campaigns. Builds organizational awareness by developing, maintaining & leading implementation of annual Marketing plan, including:

Brand voice, talking points, facts and documents.

Club’s internal and external message (Teachable Point of View)

Relationships with local media outlets and influencers for high agency coverage (including earned media & advertising)

Email marketing strategy

Social media accounts (content creation and management)

Website

Mail Campaigns

Social networking

Speaking engagements

Friend-making events

Resource Management- In partnership with Senior Finance Professional, develops & implements policies and practices that ensures resources are well stewarded. This includes:

Develops and successfully manages Annual Budgets for each business unit, rolling into one agency wide budget.

Maintains internal controls and reviews at least annually. Including items such as, but not limited to:

Gift receipt and acknowledgement

Membership tracking & reporting

Grants tracking & reporting

Expertly manages complex funding streams including multiple multi-million dollar state and federal grants including all compliance, reporting, spending, and billing requirements.

Expertly manages revenue generating programs by meeting all revenue projections and all compliance, reporting, spending, and billing requirements.

Partnership Development- Develops strategic alliances and collaborative partnerships that further Boys & Girls Clubs in the Community. Be established as the local Expert in Youth Development. Actively engages with Club’s full range of stakeholders including:

Funders

Staff

Industry peers

Government & elected leaders

And potentially School districts & other partner organizations

Community Relations – Develop high awareness of Club programs in the community including superintendents of partner school districts, school principals, and provider/advocacy committees. Act as primary community liaison with regard to all Club services. Maintain excellent relations with primary Club partners including convening appropriate collaborative groups.

Staff Management– Directly supervises Development team and possibly others and support organization leadership cabinet. Supports building and leading high-performing teams at all levels of the organization. Demonstrates track record of:

Hiring, retaining, and nurturing a high-performing team,

Motivating diverse groups of people to work together to achieve organizational results

Active participation in efforts to ensure a diverse, equitable, and inclusive internal culture.

Requirements:

Education and/or Expertise

Four-year college degree from an accredited college in the area of nonprofit business/Resource Development and/or other related discipline required. Master's Degree preferred.

Minimum of 12 years of experience preferred in the executive management, development and operation of a Boys & Girls Club (or similar organization), including board development; demonstrated ability to manage budgets and control expenses.

Computer & Equipment Skills

Full, in-depth knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite

A minimum of 3 years working with Sharepoint preferred

Experience with DonorPerfect or other Donor Databases

Ability to quickly learn new computer programs

Requirements

  • Must provide own vehicle, have a valid state driver’s license and proof of auto insurance.
  • Applicants must be able to successfully perform the essential physical functions of this position with or without a reasonable accommodation.
  • Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of position.
  • Requires ability to walk, sit, stand, bend, squat, pull/push, grasp up to 4-8 hours per day.
  • Must be able to occasionally life up to 50 lbs.
