The Johns Hopkins Department of Pediatrics seeks a per diem Certified Nursing Assistant-Peds to join the Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. The CNA will work at the Rales Health Center at KIPP Baltimore, a Baltimore City public charter school serving more than 1500 students.

The Ruth and Norman Rales Center for the Integration of Health and Education at Johns Hopkins, seeks to redesign school-based health programs to improve the health and academic achievement of children and adolescents from low-income communities. This includes the implementation of an innovative school health program that provides accessible pediatric primary care tailored to the needs of children at KIPP Baltimore.

The Rales Health Center is the site for clinical services and includes both school health services (traditional school nurse services) and a school based health center staffed by a nurse practitioner and pediatrician. The CNA will work collaboratively with the nurses in the school health services area.

  • The CNA performs a variety of office and clinical support tasks in a school-based setting.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities

School Health Services

Triage, assess, and manage as appropriate to scope of practice - students presenting for school health services, as delegated by the school nurse.
Administer medications in accordance with program and Baltimore City Health Department/Baltimore City Public Schools Guidelines
Perform home visits to support students and families in the community, as needed.

General

Answer telephone inquiries regarding the health care services provided at the health center and refer callers or visitors to the proper staff members.
Maintain inventory of office and medical supplies; inspect patient examination and treatment areas for adequate medical supplies and cleanliness.
May perform CPR, First Aid and respond to medical emergencies.
Perform related work as required.

Ability to follow health care professionals' instructions accurately and carefully.
Ability to be self-directed in the completion of assigned tasks.
Knowledge of electronic health records.
Knowledge of basic laws related to professional liability and patient confidentiality.
Ability to enter medical information into an electronic health record.
Ability to obtain vital signs and measurements necessary for patient care.
Ability to triage and obtain information from sick or injured persons.
Ability to perform CPR and First Aid.
Ability to ambulate stairs to respond to medical emergencies.

Technical qualifications & specialized certifications

CNA and BLS are required. The ideal candidate already has a CMT certificate for medication administration in schools. Otherwise, qualified applicants will be considered without a CMT with training and certification to be completed within 90 days of employment at the programs expense.

Must be able to stand for long periods.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or graduation equivalent and completion of a nursing assistant program and possession of a nursing assistant certification.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.
