JOB DESCRIPTION – Mobile Detection Deployment Unit On-Site CBRN Equipment
Custodian
Technical Resources Group, Inc. has an opportunity for a Mobile Detection Deployment
Program (MDDP) On-Site Equipment Custodian for the National Capital Region (Herndon,
VA). This position requires a candidate who will serve as a technical expert in preventative radiological/nuclear (R/N) detection and chemical/biological detection. This is a full-time on-site position with benefits. Remote work is not an option.
Position:
This position will support the Mobile Detection Deployment Unit (MDDU) located in Herndon,
VA as well as the national MDDP headquartered out of Washington DC. The MDDP has established six Mobile Detection Deployment Units (MDDUs) in 6 geographically dispersed locations to deploy mission-tailored assets on an on-call basis. Each MDDU location is equipped with a heavy truck and trailer combination. MDDUs are a national R/N detection “surge” asset, designed to augment and supplement first responders’ existing R/N detection and reporting capabilities, especially in support of national and special security events. The MDDUs can deploy with a full or partial contingent of equipment along with technical experts that can employ the equipment and/or provide training on it to frontline personnel. MDDUs are outfitted with an extensive suite of nuclear detection equipment and communications capabilities.
Equipment includes portable backpacks, handheld radioisotope identification devices, and personal radiation detection devices. This position is for an equipment custodian who will serve as a technical support member that will train personnel on the use of detection equipment, and to help integrate these capabilities into existing operations at security events.
This position will reside in the National Programs Support Division of the Operations Support
Directorate (OSD) within CWMD. The mission of CWMD OSD is to provide technical and operational support to federal, state and local (S&L) stakeholders and partners who are developing or enhancing their radiological and nuclear (R/N) detection programs and capabilities. This support includes situational awareness of the R/N detection mission; technical
Reachback for the adjudication of an R/N alarm; R/N detection Assistance; Concept of
Operations (CONOP) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) development; and Training and
Exercise validation. The attached Implementation Guide is provided to outline the policies and procedures that have been established for the execution of the MDDP.

Duties:
- As the MDDU Specialist/Equipment Custodian, you will report to the MDDU On-Site
Lead Manager as your immediate supervisor.
- Assist with the initiation, organization, and reporting on all MDDU program planning and management tasks.
- Assist with the coordination, initiation, and progress tracking of both on-site and in-the-field MDDU equipment deployments.
- Ensure MDDU equipment is repaired, calibrated, and maintained in a ready state for deployment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year.
- Provide coverage at events during standard and non-standard hours of business including weekends and Holidays when necessary.
- Maintain a high level of proficiency on all deployed MDDU equipment and provide just-in-time training on MDDU deployed equipment, as needed, to stakeholders at MDDU events.
- Conduct capabilities and equipment briefings to stakeholders as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Clearance:
- This position requires a DOD Secret-level clearance and DHS Suitability.
Required Skills:
- Experienced in chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) detection with emphasis on preventative R/N detection.
- Candidate must have at least 5 years of relevant experience in R/N detection and experience supporting preventive R/N detection mission operations at special events or during steady state operations where R/N detection is deployed. Event support can also include but not limited to demonstrations, training, and exercises at Department of
Homeland Security Special Event Assessment Rated (SEAR) Events or National SecuritySpecial Events (NSSE).
- Experience operating a truck and trailer combination (e.g., one-ton pickup with 30’ trailer)
- Knowledgeable in using the following types of representative R/N detection equipment:
Personal Radiation Detectors (PRD) (Spectroscopic/Non-Spectroscopic) (examples may include: D-tect Systems Mini Rad-D, Thermo RadEye, FLIR IdentiFINDER R300 nanoRaider, and Kromek D3S); Human Portable Radiation Detection Backpacks(examples may include: Thermo PackEye, and Bubble Technology Industries FlexSpec);Radiological Isotope Identification Devices (RIIDs) (High-Res/Low-Res) (examples may include: FLIR IdentiFINDER R400 and ORTEC Detective DX); Mobile RadiationDetection System such as Radiation Solutions Inc. RSI-701; Auxiliary Equipment:Radios, Radioactive Material Sources.
- Able to perform minor maintenance/upkeep to include battery replacement or adjusting settings, as well as able to complete multi-step troubleshooting efforts that may require interactions with vendor.
- Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds of equipment
- Excellent verbal and communications skills including completing Daily Situation
Reports, After Action Reports, Monthly Reports

- Proficient in the use of computers, A/V equipment, Microsoft Office products, Word,
Excel, PowerPoint
- Be able to travel within the contiguous United States and US territories 50% to 75% per month to support program needs.
Education:
- Bachelor's degree is preferred but not required; equivalent experience may be substituted for a degree.
Desired Skills: Prior training per 49 CFR 172.704 (HAZMAT Training) is highly desired but not required for initial hire
- Biological and/or chemical detection experience is highly desired but not required for initial hire.
- Radiation Worker training and experience working with radioactive materials.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $90,000.00 - $95,000.00 per year
