The Central Family Life Center, Inc. (CFLC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that seeks to improve the lives and environment of Staten Island residents. The mission of The Central Family Life Center is to provide Staten Island individuals, including children, seniors, at-risk youth, and families of varying backgrounds, with the needed services, programs, and opportunities to improve their overall well-being. CFLC is committed to reducing health disparities for New Yorkers using an innovative approach to foundational policy, communications, equity, diversity & inclusion, and partnership work. CFLC has maintained an active role in the Staten Island community for 30 years. CFLC serves the community through both educational programming and workshops, as well as through direct services designed to empower and improve the lives of the Staten Island Borough’s most vulnerable population.

The Central Family Life Center is hiring staff for a community-based violence prevention program that aims to reduce violent recidivism through intensive and voluntary therapeutic and support services. This program is part of Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) is designed to provides an opportunity for victim service providers to respond to the challenge of finding solutions for serving victims of crime, developing innovative and comprehensive ways of meeting their needs, and reaching underserved populations. There continues to be a need to expand the body of knowledge surrounding victims’ services. This includes statistical data, multi-disciplinary cooperation, evidence-based practices, and program evaluation. Evidence-based practice refers to having a definable outcome that is measurable, practical, tested, and proven effective. We need to continue to serve those victims of crime the system currently reaches, but also find ways to identify those who are not reporting crimes or seeking out services.

Position Summary:

The Case managers are crucial to the successful implementation of victim services as they areresponsible for providing program participants ongoing counseling support, advocacy and guidance in dealing with their personal issues that are obstacles to their success. The proposed CMs will ensure that victims have professional support to aid them in navigating their recovery and healing, as well as achieving safety and engaging in relevant criminal justice processes. CMs will ensure victims are able to set and achieve meaningful goals to help them recover and rebuild.

The ideal candidate must support the personal growth and emotional healing of victims through assistance with the Victims Compensation Process, advocacy and emotional Support, connection to resources like counseling, housing assistance, child care, transportation and crisis intervention and safety planning.

Responsibilities:

Provide information and referrals to all clients in need following the agency’s and department’s protocol.

Complete intake assessment on participants, to assess needs and obtain documentation on health, legal status, adjudicated status, education, employment, mental health service providers and any other information deemed necessary.

Accompany victims of crime to hospitals, police departments, and court while providing crisis counseling, information and referrals, assistance with crime victims compensation claims, criminal justice advocacy and personal advocacy.

Coordinate public awareness presentations that are made in schools, community centers, or other public forums, and that are designed to identify victims of crime and provide or refer them to needed services.

Provide crisis intervention services that meet urgent emotional, psychological, or physical needs of victims of crime (e.g., 24- hour hotline); accompanying victims to hospitals for medical examinations; hotline counseling and safety planning

Provide case management in all life domain areas (e.g., enrollment into Medicaid, crisis intervention, etc.).

Assist with court-related services that help victims of crime in participating in criminal justice proceedings including transportation to court, interpreter services, accompaniment to court and childcare.

8. Complete all administrative tasks as assigned on a timely basis, this includes, but is not limited to: documenting all activities, preparing weekly and monthly activity reports, maintaining up-to-date case records, and inputting into client database.

Facilitate weekly peer support groups to help participants overcome the effects of past physical, emotional, or sexual abuse; address drug or alcohol addiction; and develop successful habits and values related to life goals, money, personal relationships, drug abuse, negative or ineffective attitudes and behaviors.

Advocate with human service, health, court and criminal justice systems to resolve issues facing young people.

Establish referrals and develop a resource network to meet all participants’ needs.

Provide individual counseling on a weekly/bi-weekly basis to discuss students’ service plans and to ensure compliance and monitoring of progress.

Complete progress notes for each participant and other required information for case record.

Maintain documentation required for data reposting and keep individual service records, case notes and participant’s charts in a secured file.

Enter and update data into the system as required by the grant

Provide support services including reassurance; personal advocacy and emotional support; case management; traditional, cultural, and/or alternative therapy/healing; mental health counseling and care; peer support; guidance and help resolving practical problems created by victimization; interacting on a victim’s behalf with other social services, legal, and criminal justice agencies; assistance in the swift return of property being kept by police as evidence; language interpretation; intervention, as appropriate, with landlords or employers; and referral to other sources of assistance as needed.

Ensure participant’s confidentiality and use appropriate discretion.

Assist in enforcing policies and procedures for maintaining order among the participants. Ensuring program safety and prevention of violence.

19. As required, attend staff meetings, organizational events, conferences, workshops, and training.

Assist staff in program planning, decision-making and gathering resources.

Adhere to all laws and procedures.

Perform other task as needed.

Competencies:

  • Clear and effective communication, both orally and in writing.
  • A clear understanding of the confidentiality concept.
  • Ability to work under pressure, strong organizational skill, and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently, but relate issues to manager, as appropriate.
  • Possess strong advocacy skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain working relationships with community agencies and stakeholders.
  • Ability to remain organized and complete administrative tasks, such as documenting activities and maintaining up-to-date records, in a timely manner.

Qualifications:

1. Bachelor’s degree in career counseling, psychology, sociology or a related field. Master’s Degree a plus

2. Three years’ experience in a comparable position working with opportunity youth.

Excellent verbal, written and communication skills along with group facilitation skills.

Proficient with computers and word-processing.

Individual must have excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills, and the ability to relate to a wide range of issues, people and organizations.

Organized, capable of handling multiple requests and task, detail oriented, excellent at follow-through and ability to meet deadlines.

Strong commitment to working with young people of diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds to reorient their lives, nurture their leadership skills and empower them to make a difference in their community.

Must practice objectivity and integrity; maintain the highest standards in the services offered; respect the values of others; and provide services only in an appropriate professional relationship.

Team Oriented.

Must have a valid NYS driver’s license with a clean driving record and own a vehicle.

Job Types: Full-time, Temporary

Pay: $50,000.00 - $55,000.00 per year
