Department Overview:
The Staff Biostatistician provides biostatistical services to health science researchers in the Department of Surgery. General responsibilities include research collaboration, study planning and methodology, grant review and collaboration, data management, statistical analysis and consulting, and manuscript review/preparation. This position involves independently triaging requests for biostatistics assistance from investigators within the Department of Surgery and partnering institutions; thus incumbent should be familiar with a wide variety research design and analytic methods used in the health sciences (e.g. basic science, clinical research, population/public health). This position involves significant interaction with the clients, requiring excellent and effective oral and written communication skills. For example, the incumbent should be able to explain complex statistical concepts and results to biomedical researchers with very little statistical training as well as suggest appropriate study designs and statistical analysis. This position also has significant involvement in biostatistics educational activities; this position will prepare and deliver statistics lectures, and educate surgical residents and other non-statistical professionals in statistical analysis; consult with researchers on statistical methods and results, research design review with residents, answer statistical questions and provide data analysis specifically with resident education in mind. Occasionally, this position provides statistical consulting and guidance to MPH and medical students and residents from other departments at OHSU who collaborate with researchers in the Department of Surgery, including scholarly projects, with a focus on statistical education.
Function/Duties of Position:
  • Statistical collaboration including project management, data management, statistical analysis, and statistical report, grant application and manuscript preparation, including using publically available large databases (i.e., UNOS, NIS, NCDB, etc).
  • Teaches internal technical courses and trains/mentors staff and specifically residents.
  • Act as liaison between BDP and Surgery investigators by triaging pre- and post-award requests for biostatistics collaboration. This includes tracking and reporting of activities for Surgery in the BDP.
  • Contribute to discussion and decision on study design, statistical approaches and analytical strategies with PI, co-PIs and other collaborators.
  • Professional development including keeping up with current statistical knowledge through study group meetings, seminars and professional conferences.
  • Collaborate with analysts/programmers at OHSU (e.g., OCTRI) and public institutions (e.g., NIS) to receive, store, and access large datasets using OHSU cloud storage infrastructure.
Required Qualifications:
Master's Degree in Biostatistics or Statistics or related field AND 3 years of relevant experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Biostatistics or Statistics or related field AND 6 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated mature and effective interpersonal communications skills including tact, diplomacy and flexibility with appropriate demeanor to maintain good working relationships.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with faculty and investigators, staff, students, and visitors at all levels within OHSU and in the community. The ability to forge and foster collaborative working relationships and enlist the support of faculty and staff, both within and external to PHPM.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage and perform multiple tasks under conditions of fluctuating workloads, competing requirements, and changing deadlines; working independently and following through on assignments with minimal direction. Ability to work in a complex environment.
  • Discretionary judgment necessary to handle confidential matters.
  • Ability to analyze problems and offer creative solutions, and implement changes.
  • Strong time management and demonstrated capability to work on multiple projects at one time.
  • Strong demonstrated organization skills, with the ability to understand overall program objectives and maintain attention to detail.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD in Biostatistics or Statistics related field.
  • Project management experience is highly desirable.
  • 10+ years of experience.
