Position Focus:

Under the supervision of the Head of Printed Acquisitions, the Binding Assistant plates, source marks and labels material, puts material in protective cases, routes material using special collections workflow management system, and shelves material in backlog. 1. Plates or source marks printed material, uses Excel, Word or labelling software to print labels, prints or types bookplates, maintains inventory of bookplates and plating supplies, puts material in protective cases, attaches barcodes to cases, marks call number on plates and items, makes corrections to plates, stamps material with ownership stamps. Searches Voyager cataloging module to verify call numbers. 2. Routes and tracks materials using Aeon request and workflow management software. Routes material for conservation review. 3. Adds date and call number information to records in Inmagic DB/TextWorks accession database. 4. Prepares materials for freezing by packing materials into Paige boxes, sealing boxes in plastic bags and loading boxes into freezer. 5. Unpacks collections of materials, including collections from freezer, sorts materials and shelves materials in backlog area. 6. In consultation with supervisor, trains and directs the work of student assistants. 7. Maintains personal statistics of work performed. Inputs personal statistics into spreadsheet. 8. May sort mail for Beinecke Library and deliver mail within Beinecke Technical Services. May open packages, verify contents and record data about package and contents in Microsoft Access database. 9. May sort and arrange bookseller and auction catalogs. 10. May travel to assist with packing, pick up, or delivery of library material. 11. May measure books for boxes. As necessary assembles boxes.12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties

1. Searches for bibliographic information in database, catalog and/or files to match supplied source material in hand. 2. Checks call numbers for completeness and accuracy. Modifies call numbers for sequencing, volume, over sizing or other errors. 3. Searches stacks or in-process inventory for existing title set-ups for volumes not found in the database. 4. Quality controls completed material for accuracy and completeness of orders. 5. Processes periodicals and serial type materials for commercial binding using vendor supplied software for title and volume control. 6. Packs these materials to be processed in boxes and/or totes for shipment to bindery. Maintains in-house files for materials sent to binder. 7. Unpacks returned materials from the bindery, checks for completeness and accuracy of spine titles and call numbers. 8. Affixes fund donor bookplates, date due slips, pockets, security beeper, ownership stamp, and bar codes. Status tracks materials to Sterling Memorial Access Services, departmental libraries or special collections. 9. Generates call number labels, using automated labeling system. Cuts and applies call number label to book spine. 10. Creates records using bibliographic information from Orbis, and instructions regarding treatment for tracking materials sent for conservation treatment. 11. Measures material for boxes, inputs measurements into spreadsheet, which is sent to vendor. 12. Makes deliveries including mail to other units and staff. 13. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

One year of related work experience and a high school level education; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Ability to demonstrate patience with precise and sometimes repetitious work and the ability to accurately follow detailed procedures.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Ability to print legibly.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Demonstrated ability to use Windows based computer applications and basic keyboarding skill. Demonstrated ability to use office productivity software, including basic proficiency with MS Excel and MS Word.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a team setting and to establish sound working relationships with other units or departments. Ability to work independently and productively.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy in work, and ability to perform a variety of duties requiring consistent attention to detail despite interruptions.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Experience searching and updating records in library management systems. Background in book arts, preservation, or conservation.

Physical Requirements

1. Ability to lift a minimum of seventy (70) pounds. 2. Ability to move heavy book trucks and carts, and ability to move loaded pallets using a pallet jack. 3. Ability to stand and/or sit for extended periods of time, not to exceed three and three-quarter hours. 4. Ability to reach high shelves, climb ladders, and work in locations with dust.
