POSITION PURPOSE
The Associate Director for People and Workforce in UW Pediatrics will manage the strategy and processes related to building and retaining an exceptional team of professionals—faculty, staff, and trainees—in partnership with our healthcare and research affiliated partners. This position will function as advisor and consultant while also rolling up their sleeves to execute solutions. The successful candidate will optimize people-centered activities such as hiring, training, professional development, and performance management to support the Department’s growth, mission, and financial sustainability.

This position will report to the Vice Chair of Administration and Finance for UW Pediatrics and will be a part of the department’s Executive Council. The position will further efforts to develop a well-defined culture aligned with the department’s mission, vision, and values. The Associate Director will have a direct role in ensuring that the department’s values are reinforced with every initiative and communication.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Human Resources Leadership and Management (35%)
The Associate Director works collaboratively with faculty affairs team, divisions, School of Medicine, and central campus AHR (OAP) to recruit, retain and advance world-class academic personnel. Therefore, the Associate Director for People & Workforce, in supporting the department management team, must be able to assess, analyze, and propose ideas that will continue to build and strengthen the organization and services that support the University, School and Department mission of academic excellence.
Subject matter expert on human resources pursuant to interdisciplinary, interdepartmental, and joint venture initiatives:
Personnel Issues – Conduct and corrective action, complaints, grievances (25%)
The Associate Director, People & Workforce is expected to manage a high volume of diverse personnel issues that range in complexity and involve a diverse set of constituent groups, including peers and leadership across the SoM, UW Medicine, and the UW. The Associate Director must manage the workload with attention to detail and competing deadlines, provide clear communications about status updates, and involve key stakeholders in progress reports and decision-making.
Under the general guidance of the Vice Chair/Chair, the Associate Director is responsible for specific guidance and assistance on personnel and/or policy matters arising out of UW Pediatrics divisions and units. The Associate Director will assume primary responsibility for a wide range of duties related to the consultation, guidance and/or investigation of a variety of faculty, staff, and trainee issues, such as performance management, remediation, professionalism, and compliance. The Associate Director will exercise discretion and independent judgment in handling personnel issues, including:
Strategic Organizational Planning and Implementation (20%)
The Associate Director serves on the Department Executive Council and is a key participant in strategic planning and development of goals and strategies for people/workforce. The role of the Associate Director on this executive team is to:
Policy Development and Regulatory Compliance Activities (10%)
The Associate Director works with the School of Medicine and the Provost's Office regarding compliance issues within the human resource programs of the Department. The University of Washington is responsible for compliance with all federal (Affirmative Action, Department of Labor, etc.), State (WAC & RCW), UW (Faculty Code), and other entity regulatory standards and requirement.
Professional Development/Mentoring (10%)
The Associate Director leads the effort in providing substantial orientation to new employees (faculty, staff, trainees) about the critical milestones that must be achieved to obtain an initial faculty appointment and subsequent promotion by providing an overview of the departmental criteria and creating resource materials, such as discussion and content guides.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
This position requires an advanced degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or related field, and 5 years of progressively increasing responsibility experience within a large organization.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

This position is eligible for a hybrid work environment with 2 days per week in-office, and 3 days per week working from home.
