POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Chen group in the Department of Chemistry is recruiting for a full-time Assistant Project Scientist.

OVERVIEW

The assistant project scientist makes significant and creative contributions to the projects of biofunctional studies of carbohydrate-containing molecules and functional studies of glycosyltransferases and other glycan and glycoconjugate biosynthetic enzymes to identify carbohydrate-based therapeutics in her academic discipline. The appointee possesses more than 5 years of experience in the molecular biology and biochemistry fields related to glycoscience and the creativity necessary to function at a high level of competence. The appointee participates in group meetings, glycoscience related meetings and conferences to master the front-line of the glycochemistry and glycobiology and increase the competency. The appointee provides leadership within the research group, interacts and coordinates with undergraduate students and graduate students. The assistant project scientist performs research and collaboration programs and writes research papers as well as extramural research proposals under the general guidance of the PI. The appointee acts on behalf of the PI with the day-to-day management of the research group as required.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

I. RESEARCH (90%)
Research activity (60%)

  • Determine research goals in the consultation with the PI.
  • Establish appropriate methods and techniques.
  • Supervise undergraduate students and graduate students regarding the technical aspects of the research, including methods development, trouble-shooting problems, interpreting results, and planning following-up experiments.
  • Performs experimental research on biofunctional studies of carbohydrate-containing molecules, biochemical characterization and functional studies of glycosyltransferases and other glycan and glycoconjugate biosynthetic enzymes.
  • Collect, analyze, summarize, and present data.
  • Performs collaboration programs.

Publication (20%)

  • Prepare manuscript drafts for both research and review papers.
  • Revise manuscripts under the general guidance of the PI.

Grant Acquisition (10%)

  • Write internal proposals as well as extramural research proposals for getting funding from federal and state agencies and other funding organizations under the general direction of the PI.
  • Prepare data and reports as required by granting agencies.

II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (10%)

  • Participate in glycoscience related conferences.
  • Attend glycochemistry and glycobiology related seminars.
  • Participate in group, subgroup, project, and collaboration meetings.
  • Present research results by giving oral and/or poster presentations at conferences, seminars or laboratory meetings.
  • Serve as a reviewer of research proposals and publications in related research areas and scientific expertise.

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Biochemical Engineering, or Molecular Biology. More than 5-years post Ph.D. research experience in the glycoscience field.
