The Rockefeller University is a world-renowned center for research and education in biomedical sciences. The Communications and Public Affairs (CPA) team develops the University's overall communications strategy and messaging, and is responsible for a number of print and electronic publications, the external website, media relations, social media, public events, and more.


Detailed Description


Reporting directly to the Associate Vice President for Communications, the Assistant Editor will be part of a dynamic and talented team producing content for several printed and online platforms/channels, such as newsletters, news releases, web pages, print publications, and other related assignments. The Assistant Editor will work closely with the Director of Communications for direction, guidance, and feedback. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: researching, writing, and editing copy for external and internal audiences; proofreading a wide variety of office materials; researching and writing stories for an internal newsletter and other online and print publications; processing and updating existing copy for the website; contributing to the University's social media presence; preparing event materials, including programs and speaker bios; compiling and fact-checking entries for the university's online calendar; and other duties and special projects as assigned. The targeted salary is $80,000 to $90,000.


Job Requirements


Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, or a related field is required, along with three to five years of related work experience, preferably in a publishing or public relations setting. Proficiency with desktop publishing software, HTML, and content management systems is required. Familiarity with data analysis tools to assess performance of e-newsletters and other digital products desirable. Science coursework and/or interest in biosciences is a strong plus. Experience in an academic or research institution is strongly preferred. Must have excellent interpersonal skills and a high degree of creativity, with an ability to work independently under deadline constraints. The ideal candidate is a talented wordsmith, capable of creating clear, compelling, concise, and accurate copy, as well as a collaborative editor who can work with other members of a team to develop engaging stories that meet specific strategic needs. Sharp proofreading skills and acute attention to detail are musts, as is the ability to represent the office professionally and confidently among a diverse scientific community, including administrators and faculty. Although most work will take place during normal business hours, occasional evening or weekend work may be required.
