Summary:
The University of Portland seeks an Assistant Dean for the Pacific Alliance for Catholic Education (PACE) to oversee the University’s graduate programs serving Catholic P-12 education. Primary functions of the role include program leadership, academic vitality oversight, course instruction, budget management, donor relations, and facilitation and expansion of new program initiatives and partnerships. This is a full-time, exempt staff position within the School of Education (SOE) that may offer a joint faculty appointment dependent upon the qualifications and experience of the candidate.

Responsibilities:
Core Duties
- Lead and supervise staff stewarding a vibrant, multifaceted program serving Catholic schools and Catholic school educators throughout the western United States.
- Lead activities in the core program pillars of spirituality in the Catholic tradition, community building and community life, and professional development in Catholic K-12 education.
- Lead and oversee a year-round domestic and international recruiting/marketing effort, admissions process, and placement of teacher and leadership candidates with regional Catholic-school partners.
- Assume primary responsibility for 50+ first and second year teachers placed in the field, serving in 6 states, 13 communities, and at more than 30 Catholic partner schools. Visit each community annually to provide academic and formational support, including engaging in teacher observation/feedback and meetings with school principals.
- Serve as faculty member for PACE Catholic educator formation courses and School of Education courses as assigned.
- Serve as the primary academic advisor for PACE teachers, liaising with SOE staff coordinating licensing and endorsement supervision, supervisor recruitment, and collaborating with University colleagues on academic plans and plans of assistance as needed.
- Lead the PACE team in the execution of the 7-week PACE Summer experience, including housing and meals for 75+ teachers, program orientation, weekly Catholic Mass and Fellowship, and Graduation and Commissioning ceremony.
- Collaborate with the PACE team and other University areas (such as Campus Ministry and Health and Counseling Center) on the design and implementation of a Catholic teacher formation plan based on spirituality, community, and professional development, including the annual cycle of retreats and integrated formation course.
- Manage PACE budget and endowment, tracking expenditures and performing fiscal analysis as needed.
- Partner with the Office of Development to identify new donors and cultivate additional sources of financial support.
- Act as the primary program representative regionally and nationally, representing PACE and the School of Education on select boards and committees, as well as applicable events, conferences, and consortiums.
- Lead additional university initiatives in support of Catholic education under the auspices of PACE, including program expansion, Catholic school principalship, and professional development experiences.
- Partner with the Office of Alumni Relations to facilitate program efforts around alumni engagement, including professional development opportunities, alumni giving, and gatherings in select PACE communities.
- Manage and supervise a diverse team of part-time and full-time employees. Supervisory responsibilities include hiring processes, setting of expectations, training and professional development, performance management and evaluations, and disciplinary processes including termination of employment.

Requirements:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education and Experience
- Required: Master’s degree in education or related field required.
- Preferred: Doctoral degree (Ed.D. or Ph.D.)
- Required: Minimum of five years of relevant experience in an education setting, with at least two years of experience teaching and mentoring diverse populations in P-12 classrooms.
- Preferred: Proven teacher-leader with experience in intentional community living and/or adult formation and a background in higher education and non-profit or post-graduate service program administration.
- Or a combination of equivalent education and/or experience.
Certifications and Licenses

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Experience with and knowledge of P-12 educational pedagogy and Catholic school settings.
- Experience in Catholic spirituality, retreats, and the religious dimensions of Catholic K-12 education.
- Experience with and knowledge of working with pre-service and in-service teachers.
- Demonstrates leadership, initiative, energy, and sound judgment.
- Ability to effectively manage a team.
- Proven success with complex program management while working under minimal supervision.
- Exceptional project planning skills and ability to effectively manage multiple tasks/deadlines.
- Superior attention to detail with excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to effectively manage projects and balance multiple priorities while maintaining a positive outlook and working effectively in a collaborative environment.
