TITLE: ARCHAEOLOGICAL TECHNICIAN / BOAT OPERATOR

SUMMARY:
Archaeological technician/boat operator ("Technician") serves as a member of the crew technicians employed by the Spokane Tribe of Indians Preservation Program (STIPP). (S)he will assist the Project Archaeologist, Tribal Archaeologist, and/or Principal Investigator in conducting cultural resource compliance work on and off the Spokane Reservation. This includes site survey, monitoring, excavation, and occasional construction monitoring. The Technician will adhere to professional standards of archaeological practice and ethics. This position reports to the STIPP Project and Tribal Archaeologists.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct/support fieldwork component of cultural resource compliance, including pedestrian survey, shovel testing, test unit excavation.
- Data collection: detailed daily notes, proper field forms, GPS, digital photography
- Safe operation of motor vehicles on- and off-road; safe operation of powered boat in fresh water riverine environment
- Work independently and as part of a team in the accomplishment of assigned tasks.
- Support the efforts of the Project Archaeologist, Tribal Archaeologist, and Principal Investigator, and the Program as a whole.
- Proper use of safety equipment and safe practices
- Added Duties: public outreach (effectively present cultural information at the Interstate Fair, school educational presentations, and culture week), student intern mentoring.
- Minimal overnight travel as required for occasional technical meetings and trainings.
SPECIFIC TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Pedestrian survey (walking) up to 5 miles per day
- Use of common archaeology hand tools
- Documentation of all aspects of field investigation using sketch mapping, Trimble Geo XT GPS, and digital photography
- Participate in burial recovery excavations and documentation of naturally disinterred ancestral remains
- Compile results of field activities in written daily notes
- Work with Tribal Elders, confirming and recording pertinent site information
- Evaluation of archaeological and ethnographic sites on and off the Spokane Indian Reservation with the aid of Archaeologists
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have the knowledge of Spokane Tribal culture and history.
- Must have the ability to use common archaeology hand tools (shovel, pick, trowel, screen, etc.), and operate personal computers, and Trimble GPS.
- Must be able to physically perform job duties; dig holes through rocky sediments, lift 5-gallon buckets of dirt, and be able to walk up to 5 miles per day in various weather conditions (often inclement) and over difficult terrain at times.
- Must be able to write clear and concise field notes
- Must have a good work history and be able to perform alone, or as part of a team
- Valid driver's license and good driving record required
