Special Information:

This position is based in Helena at the FWP Headquarters and works with all Wildlife Division staff and programs. The person in this position needs to be positive, organized, creative, and independent. Many of the wildlife programs are controversial, and the person in this position will be the first point of contact for individuals who are passionate about these programs. They must be able to remain calm and help the individual(s) communicate effectively.

Required to administer MRRE database for up to two hours/day on weekends and holidays.

There are specific deadlines that must be met relative to processing contracts, issuing payments, and developing information, so the person in this position must be able to work under pressure at times to meet important deadlines.

Continual inquiries from the public about all aspects of wildlife management especially hunting access, require the incumbent in this position to be very knowledgeable and up to date on current hunting regulations.

Travel and overnight stays may be required as necessary to complete responsibilities of this position.

Job Duties:

The Wildlife Division is responsible for the conservation and management of Montana’s 600+ birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians and their habitat. Activities related to the Wildlife Program include coordination and planning, monitoring the status of wildlife and habitats, conserving, and enhancing wildlife habitat, and providing opportunity for public enjoyment of wildlife through hunting, trapping, and viewing. The program manages animals legislatively categorized as big game, nongame wildlife, migratory game birds, upland game, furbearers, and threatened and endangered species.

Responsibilities within the Wildlife Division fall into four major themes: Wildlife Management, Habitat, Access, and Wildlife Conflict. Program staff in Helena develop program priorities in conjunction with regional staff in 7 administrative regions, who then implement the program at the field level. The purpose of this position is to provide administrative assistance and support in coordination with the Administrative Support Supervisor, to the Wildlife Division, Headquarters, and regional staff. This position will be the first point of contact to assist the public by providing current information regarding Montana regulated wildlife (hunting and trapping); nongame, threatened and endangered wildlife; conservation and habitat resources.

This position also assists with maintenance and updating of Wildlife databases. This position provides assistance to the Administrative Support Supervisor with other office functions, including assisting with continual updating of the wildlife portions of the department's website. Physical and Environmental Demands:

Overall working conditions are within an office environment. All work must be accomplished with frequent interruptions while meeting many required deadlines during extremely busy times of the year. Pressures from staff and the public are demanding the employee is occasionally required to lift boxes weighing up to 25 pounds; sitting for long periods of time at a desk, on the telephone, and at computer workstations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Incumbent must have knowledge of business English, including grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure. Skill in use of personal computers, MS Office, and ability to adapt to various proprietary computer applications. Must have excellent customer service skills and a desire to deliver such. Must have knowledge general math and reasoning skills. Progressive responsibility in public relations/office operations/administrative support.




Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):

The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through combination of education and experience equivalent to 2-year job-related college or vocational training and 1-2 years of job-related work experience. Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
