The Manatee County Utilities Departmentprovides water services to over 139,000 residents across 900 square miles of unincorporated portions of Manatee County, including the cities of Bradenton Beach, Holmes Beach, and Anna Maria. Our goal is to be "always on, always safe, always affordable."
Manatee County maintains two pressurized water systems, potable drinking water and reclaim irrigation water. The potable system has over 1,600 miles of potable water mains, over 9,000 fire hydrants, 33,000 isolation valves, and over 139,000 service connections. The reclaim system has 200 miles of reclaim irrigation lines, 140 fire hydrants, over 3,000 isolation valves, and over 10,500 service connections. We also supply water to Longboat Key, the City of Bradenton, the city of Palmetto, and Sarasota County.
As a Water Distribution Field Maintenance Technician I-III (DOQ) - you will perform various maintenance activities including construction, repair, and installation of water lines to Manatee County customers. Equipment used involves pumps, valves, piping, and structures related to infrastructure, building, facilities, or equipment in the operation of Manatee County's Water Systems. The position may work with new technicians providing on-the-job instruction and best practice knowledge.
NOTE: POSITION LEVEL AND SALARY WILL BE DEPENDENT ON QUALIFICATIONS (DOQ.)
Additional "career incentive" pay is awarded for the following levels:
Level 2 Water Distribution Operator License - $1.00 per hour;
Level 1 Water Distribution Operator License - $1.50 per hour.

What You Will Do
· Maintain, repair, inspect water distribution systems in accordance with established procedures to ensure drinking water and surface water discharge complies with safe and regulated measures.
· Assist with adding, repairing, replacing, removing, and rebuilding equipment including water meters, water and reclaim mains, water and reclaim services, water and reclaim valves, and water and reclaim hydrants.
· Rebuild roads, curbs, sidewalks due to repair and maintenance of water lines.
· Operate hand/power tools, saws, drills, jack hammers, compactors.
· Drive County trucks including dump and flushers, backhoes.
Who You Are
· An essential crew member responsible for water treatment and pumping equipment, water distribution, reclaimed water distribution principles and practices of maintenance, repair, or construction of same.
· Ability to perform physical strenuous work in varying and adverse weather conditions; uneven or rugged terrain; and safely operate equipment under variable conditions including rough, uneven, slippery terrain.
· Ability to kneel, bend, stoop, crawl, reach, push, pull and perform other physical requirements commensurate with demands of position.
· Attention to detail and follow protocols correctly and accurately.
· A problem solver – you will identify issues, research, and implement solutions to ensure the water distribution system is operating properly.
Minimum Qualifications
TRAINEE-III: High school graduate/equivalent.
TRAINEE: No experience required.
TRAINEE: Valid driver's license with valid Florida driver's license within 30 days of hire. Valid Florida Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of hire. Valid Florida Class "A" CDL Permit WITH written Air Brakes, Tanker, Combination, and General Knowledge test required prior to starting work.
TRAINEE: Confined Space Certification" within one (1) year of employment.
Level 3 Distribution Systems Operator License within eighteen (18) months of hire.
TECH I: Minimum of one (1) year of experience in repair and maintenance or installation of mechanical equipment in a utility or closely related system.
TECH II: Minimum of three (3) years experience in repair and maintenance or installation of mechanical equipment in a utility or closely related system.; one (1) year back-hoe experience.
TECH III: High school graduate/equivalent.
Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in repair and maintenance or installation of mechanical equipment in a utility or closely related system.; three (3) years back-hoe experience.
TECH I – III: Valid Florida Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
TECH I: Level 3 Distribution Systems Operator License; Confined Space Entry, Bloodborne and Waterborne Pathogen Safety Course certification.
TECH II: Level 2 Distribution Systems Operator License; Confined Space Entry, Bloodborne and Waterborne Pathogen Safety Course, Basic Pump Maintenance, Basic Welding, Traffic Control Safety certification.
TECH III: Level 1 Distribution Systems Operator License; Confined Space Entry, Bloodborne and Waterborne Pathogen Safety Course, Basic Pump Maintenance, Basic Welding, Traffic Control Safety, Cross Connection Control, and Trenching and Shoring certification.
